Lafayette Square, the iconic public park directly opposite the White House, welcomed visitors again on Tuesday morning after a partial reopening. For eight months the park had been sealed off by a temporary steel fence that stretched along H Street NW, blocking the traditional gathering place for demonstrations and everyday recreation.
Fence moved to create a public corridor
Early Tuesday, workers shifted the barrier about 50 yards into the park, positioning it near the marble base of the bronze equestrian statue of Andrew Jackson. The new alignment bisects the square, restoring public access to roughly half of the park’s grassy lawns, mature trees, brick pathways and benches. Visitors were seen strolling, cycling and jogging from H Street, many pausing to photograph the White House framed by the relocated fencing.
Security enhancements under way
The U.S. Secret Service, in coordination with the White House, the Department of the Interior and the National Park Service, is pursuing long‑term security upgrades for Lafayette Square. A submission to the National Capital Planning Commission outlines possible additions such as permanent fencing, monitoring systems and alarms. Officials describe the current setup as a “piecemeal” solution that the new plan aims to replace.
While the partial opening restores access to the park’s central areas, the fence still blocks the view of Pennsylvania Avenue and the permanent barrier in front of the White House. Entry to the adjacent Jackson Place and Madison Place continues to require passage through a secure gate.
Community response
Local residents and tourists alike expressed relief at being able to enjoy the historic green space again. Many noted the importance of preserving the park’s role as a place for peaceful assembly and everyday leisure, while also recognizing the need for robust security measures around the nation’s most visible executive residence.
