Republicans warn Senate inaction on affordability as midterms approach

Republican senators are expressing concern that the Senate’s recent focus on the Protect College Sports Act has left the pressing issue of rising living costs unaddressed as the midterm election draws near. Sen. Josh Hawley (R‑MO) told Fox News Digital that he hopes the upcoming bill will be “the most perfect and pristine piece of legislation ever” despite the “ungodly amount of time” spent on sports reform.

Affordability remains a top voter concern

Hawley highlighted the need to tackle costs that affect everyday Americans – from fuel and prescription drugs to health‑care and the financial impact of the artificial‑intelligence boom. He warned that without action, Republicans risk losing voters who are frustrated by the “sting on wallets” caused by inflation and supply‑chain pressures.

Senate leadership urged to prioritize cost‑of‑living measures

Sen. John Kennedy (R‑LA) echoed the sentiment, saying, “We’re voting for the college‑sports bill, but moms and dads across America aren’t worried about football coaches; they’re worried about their bills.” Kennedy and other GOP senators have pressed Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R‑SD) to schedule a reconciliation vote on an affordability package, including a proposal that would require AI companies to shoulder rising utility costs for data centers.

Sen. Jon Husted (R‑OH) introduced the AI‑utility bill, but Democrats are expected to block it, fearing it could give Republicans or President Trump a legislative win so close to the election.

GOP leaders call for a second chance

Sen. Thom Tillis (R‑NC) reminded colleagues that Republicans must own the issue of affordability rather than blaming the prior administration. “That’s how you show leadership and get it done,” he said, urging the party to deliver on promises made to voters.

Vice President JD Vance has also asked voters for “another chance” this fall, hoping the party can present a clear plan to ease cost pressures before the November 3 ballot.

As the Senate prepares to leave Washington for the campaign trail, Republicans face a growing challenge: convincing voters that they are taking concrete steps to lower prices while the chamber continues to prioritize college‑sports legislation.
