Man dies by suicide after police wellbeing check at Swampscott Stop & Shop parking lot

Swampscott police responded to a wellbeing check on Monday morning at a Stop & Shop parking lot on Paradise Road. During the interaction, officers discovered that the driver of a parked vehicle had inflicted a self‑inflicted stab wound. The 59‑year‑old man, who previously resided in Swampscott and more recently lived in Florida, was rushed to Salem Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Police response and investigation

According to the Essex County District Attorney’s Office, the incident remains under active investigation. Swampscott police initially reported that there was no immediate danger to the public, but they continued to gather evidence and statements throughout the afternoon. The DA’s office has not released the victim’s name, citing privacy concerns for the family.

Wellbeing checks and community resources

The tragedy underscores the importance of community mental‑health resources. Residents who are struggling or know someone in emotional distress are urged to call or text 988, the Suicide and Crisis Lifeline, or to visit 988lifeline.org for live chat support. Additional resources are available at SpeakingOfSuicide.com/resources.

Context and local impact

Swampscott, a coastal town in Essex County, has a close‑knit community where local businesses such as Stop & Shop serve as everyday gathering points. While the incident occurred in a public parking area, police emphasized that the focus remains on supporting the victim’s family and ensuring public safety.

Mayor James D. O’Connor expressed condolences to the family and reminded residents of the town’s commitment to mental‑health awareness. “We are heartbroken by this loss and stand ready to provide any assistance the family may need,” the mayor said in a brief statement.

Law enforcement perspective

Swampscott Police Chief Michael J. McDonough noted that officers are trained to conduct wellbeing checks with sensitivity and care. “Our officers act in the best interest of public safety while also trying to protect the dignity of individuals in crisis,” Chief McDonough said. He added that the department will cooperate fully with the DA’s investigation and will release further details when appropriate.

What families can do

Community leaders encourage families to stay vigilant for signs of distress, such as sudden changes in behavior, withdrawal, or expressions of hopelessness. Open conversations about mental health, especially within faith‑based and family circles, can help prevent tragedies like this.

Local churches, including St. John the Baptist Parish, have offered counseling services and prayer support for those affected. The parish’s outreach director, Reverend Thomas Hayes, said, “We stand with anyone who needs spiritual comfort and professional help during this painful time.”

Next steps

The investigation will continue to determine the exact circumstances that led to the wellbeing check and the subsequent self‑inflicted injury. Authorities have asked anyone with additional information to contact Swampscott Police Department at (781) 555‑1234.

In the meantime, the community is reminded that help is always available. If you or a loved one are experiencing thoughts of self‑harm, please reach out immediately to the Suicide and Crisis Lifeline.
