U.S. Housing and Urban Development Secretary Scott Turner recently visited central Iowa to discuss affordable housing and rural revitalization efforts. His visit included stops in Waukee and Indianola, where he met with local leaders and toured housing developments.
Affordable Housing in Waukee
In Waukee, Secretary Turner and Congressman Zach Nunn participated in a roundtable discussion about the bipartisan 21st Century Road to Housing Act, which aims to expand access to affordable housing by streamlining the homebuilding process. They also toured a Habitat for Humanity community under construction, which will provide 48 new affordable homes. Turner emphasized the importance of public-private partnerships in reducing housing costs and increasing supply.
Revitalization Efforts in Indianola
Turner’s visit continued in Indianola, where he joined Congresswoman Mariannette Miller-Meeks to highlight the revitalization of the town square. The city’s efforts, supported by a recent grant, aim to rejuvenate several buildings and serve as a model for other rural communities. Turner praised the collaboration between local leaders, business owners, and residents in driving these initiatives.
Both Turner and Miller-Meeks underscored the potential for similar projects to enhance the quality of life in rural areas, making them attractive places to live and raise families.
