Maritime experts to examine newly exposed 19th‑century shipwreck on Nantucket’s Miacomet Beach

Boston — A powerful weekend nor’easter has revealed a new section of wooden wreckage on Miacomet Beach, the southern shore of Nantucket. The Egan Maritime Institute, which runs the Nantucket Shipwreck & Lifesaving Museum, announced that its exhibits and collections manager will travel to the island on Monday to survey the exposed timbers and prepare a report for state underwater archaeologists.

Potential link to the 1884 Warren Sawyer schooner

The splintered beams, still fastened together by rusted iron, were found near an area where remnants of the Warren Sawyer have been documented before. The wooden schooner ran aground on Dec. 22, 1884 while carrying more than 1,100 bales of cotton and 28 tons of scrap iron from New Orleans to Boston. After the crew and captain were rescued, island residents salvaged roughly 700 bales of cotton using skids and teams of oxen. A second storm on Jan. 6, 1885 broke the vessel apart, scattering hull pieces, cargo and cordage across more than half a mile of beach.

State archaeologists inspected a roughly 42‑foot (12.8‑meter) section of hull on Miacomet Beach in late 2022 and concluded it was likely part of the Warren Sawyer. A 15‑foot‑square (4.6‑meter‑square) section of the lower stern appeared nearby in February 2023, but shifting sands quickly covered it again before further documentation could occur.

What the investigation will entail

The Egan Maritime Institute’s expert will photograph and measure the newly visible timbers, note construction details, and compare them with the earlier documented sections. The findings will be forwarded to the Massachusetts Board of Underwater Archaeological Resources, which will coordinate with the institute to determine the wreck’s identity and significance.

Officials emphasized that the site is protected by Massachusetts law, which prohibits the removal, damage, or displacement of underwater archaeological resources. Visitors are urged to stay clear of the exposed area to preserve the integrity of the remains for professional study.

Why Nantucket’s shipwrecks matter

Nantucket sits within a region often called the “graveyards of the Atlantic,” where more than 750 wrecks are estimated to lie in surrounding waters. Each discovery adds to the understanding of 19th‑century maritime trade, shipbuilding techniques, and the island’s role as a historic hub for commerce and rescue operations.

Beyond academic interest, the preservation of these wrecks supports local heritage tourism. The Nantucket Shipwreck & Lifesaving Museum draws visitors eager to learn about the island’s seafaring past, and new findings can enrich future exhibits and educational programs.

Broader context of the nor’easter

The recent nor’easter battered the Northeast coastline with heavy rain, strong winds and dangerous surf, causing power outages for more than 100,000 customers from New Jersey to New England. Coastal erosion concerns grew as waves pounded beaches and seawalls, highlighting the ongoing vulnerability of shoreline communities.

While the storm’s immediate impacts were felt across the region, the unexpected exposure of historic ship timbers on Nantucket offers a reminder that even severe weather can uncover pieces of our shared heritage. The collaborative effort between the Egan Maritime Institute and state archaeologists aims to protect and interpret these artifacts for future generations.
