Lakers host media day in Los Angeles as new ownership and roster take center stage

Los Angeles – The Los Angeles Lakers held their annual media day on Monday, giving local fans and the national press a first look at the team’s new direction as it steps into the post‑LeBron James era. The event, held at Crypto.com Arena at 11:30 a.m., featured players, coaches and front‑office executives answering questions about the upcoming season.

Coaching perspective

Head coach J.J. Redick, speaking alongside general manager Rob Pelinka, addressed the impact of LeBron James’ departure to Philadelphia. “This team is their team,” Redick said. “I’ve been consistent over the last two years in challenging all the guys to lead in their own way. I’ve already spoken with a number of the guys about what that might look like this season.” Redick promised that the roster’s new leaders will emerge as the season progresses.

Roster changes

The Lakers entered the offseason with a flurry of moves. A trade with Utah brought in center Walker Kessler, while free‑agent signings added guards Collin Sexton and Quentin Grimes, and center Sandro Mamukelashvili. The additions aim to complement rising stars Luka Doncic and Austin Reaves, who are expected to shoulder the scoring load.

Ownership transition

Perhaps the most surprising development came in August when the team changed hands. Less than a year after purchasing the franchise, Dodgers owner Mark Walter sold the Lakers to venture‑capitalist Joshua Kushner and former Disney CEO Bob Iger. Iger, 75, took over Disney earlier this year and in 2024 became the controlling owner of NWSL club Angel City FC. Kushner, 41, founded Thrive Capital and is a minority owner of the Miami Heat. He is also the brother of Jared Kushner, the son‑in‑law of President Donald Trump, who continues to serve as the nation’s 47th President.

Season outlook

The Lakers’ most recent championship came in 2020, concluding a pandemic‑shortened season. Pre‑season action begins on Oct. 5 at Sacramento, with the regular season slated to open on Oct. 21 against the Golden State Warriors at the Crypto.com Arena. Los Angeles joins 27 other NBA clubs holding media events this week, while Houston and Dallas hosted theirs earlier due to upcoming overseas travel.

Community impact

Beyond the on‑court changes, the Lakers remain a cultural cornerstone for the city, driving local business and community initiatives. The media day highlighted the franchise’s commitment to staying engaged with fans, schools and charitable partners throughout Southern California.
