Indian startup TakeMe2Space to launch first orbital‑computing satellite on SpaceX

Indian space startup TakeMe2Space announced that its first orbital‑computing satellite, the MOI‑1A, will launch on SpaceX’s Transporter‑18 rideshare mission on Oct. 1. The sub‑50 kg spacecraft will carry Nvidia Orin NX edge‑computing processors, allowing customers to run AI models in orbit and receive only processed results rather than raw data.

Customer base and business model

TakeMe2Space said it has signed 23 customers for the mission, ranging from geographic information system firms to educational institutions. Commercial users include agriculture, mining, supply‑chain management and insurance companies. U.S.‑based space‑data analytics firm Little Place Labs is also among the early adopters.

Founder and CEO Ronak Samantray explained that the satellite’s value proposition is for customers who currently pay to download large volumes of raw data and then perform compute on the ground. By moving the compute step to orbit, the cost of data transmission is reduced, offsetting the premium charged for on‑board processing.

Technical details

The MOI‑1A satellite is equipped with about 150 watts of power and runs containerized AI workloads. It differs from conventional data‑center satellites by performing inference directly in space. While companies such as SpaceX and Starcloud plan to use more advanced Nvidia chips found in terrestrial data centres, TakeMe2Space’s approach focuses on a lightweight, edge‑computing architecture suitable for a broad range of commercial applications.

Long‑term vision

TakeMe2Space’s roadmap includes larger, networked satellites that can serve multiple customers simultaneously. The company aims to expand satellite size and computing capacity beginning in 2027, with the goal of further lowering costs and increasing performance.

In addition to AI processing, the startup plans to offer cold storage in orbit for critical data, targeting financial‑services and defence customers who need an extra backup beyond terrestrial cloud providers.

Past missions and challenges

The firm’s earlier technology‑demonstration mission in late 2024 proved the ability to upload applications, run AI inference in orbit, and download results. A subsequent satellite, MOI‑1, was lost after a launch‑vehicle third‑stage failure, underscoring the risks inherent in space operations.

TakeMe2Space designs and manufactures most satellite subsystems in India, while sourcing chips, solar cells and propulsion systems from external suppliers. The company’s strategy emphasizes domestic engineering talent combined with selective global partnerships.

Industry context

Orbital computing is an emerging niche that promises to reduce latency and bandwidth costs for data‑intensive industries. By processing data close to the source, customers can obtain actionable insights faster, a benefit that aligns with the growing demand for real‑time analytics in agriculture, mining and logistics.

TakeMe2Space’s partnership with SpaceX provides a reliable launch platform and demonstrates the increasing collaboration between Indian space innovators and established global launch providers.

Outlook

With the upcoming launch, TakeMe2Space aims to validate its commercial model and attract additional customers for future, larger satellites. Success could position the company as a key player in the nascent orbital‑computing market, offering U.S. and international firms a new way to handle massive data streams without overburdening terrestrial networks.
