Oregon Ducks quarterback Dante Moore diagnosed with concussion after late hit

Oregon head coach Dan Lanning announced Sunday that senior quarterback Dante Moore sustained a concussion during the Ducks’ 41-27 win over the USC Trojans on Saturday night in Los Angeles. The injury occurred with 10:06 left in the second quarter when Moore scrambled and attempted to slide, only to be struck in the head by linebacker Desman Stephens II.

Medical evaluation and response

Moore was carted off the field and evaluated by the medical staffs of both Oregon and USC, as well as doctors at LA General Medical Center. “Dante sustained a concussion in last night’s game, but fortunately his MRI and CT scans came back clean and he did not suffer any additional injuries,” Lanning said in a statement. “Every concussion is different, and we are going to move forward with an abundance of caution to ensure we make the best decisions for Dante and his future.”

The Ducks’ spokesperson confirmed that Moore had movement in all extremities and was receiving thorough care. Lanning expressed gratitude for the quick and thorough actions of the medical teams, noting that the coordinated effort helped ensure the best possible treatment for the player.

Disciplinary action for the hit

USC linebacker Desman Stephens II was called for targeting and ejected from the game. USC head coach Lincoln Riley announced that Stephens will be suspended for one game, the upcoming Saturday matchup against Washington. Riley called the conduct “unacceptable” and said it does not reflect the character of USC football. Stephens issued a public apology, acknowledging that his reaction after the hit was “completely inappropriate and inexcusable” and expressing remorse to Moore, his family, and fans.

Impact on the game and next steps

Following Moore’s departure, backup quarterback Dylan Raiola, a transfer from Nebraska, stepped in and completed 19 of 25 passes for 289 yards and two touchdowns. The Ducks held on for the victory, improving to 3-1 on the season and earning a bye week before hosting No. 23 UCLA on Oct. 10 in Eugene.

Moore entered the season having completed 69 of 99 attempts (69.7%) for 926 yards, nine touchdowns and no interceptions. He was 8 of 10 for 77 yards in the USC game before the injury. The coaching staff indicated that Moore will remain under observation and will not return to practice until cleared by medical professionals.

Community reaction

The Oregon football community rallied around Moore, with fans and alumni sending messages of support on social media. Riley and the Trojan family also extended well‑wishes, emphasizing sportsmanship and the shared responsibility to protect player safety.

Both programs reiterated their commitment to player health and to enforcing the targeting rule that aims to prevent dangerous hits. The incident underscores the ongoing focus on concussion protocols across college football.
