Senate vote keeps President Trump’s Iran action alive as Fetterman breaks with Democrats

In a closely watched Senate vote on Thursday, the chamber rejected a resolution that would have limited President Donald Trump’s ongoing military actions against Iran. The measure fell 50‑49, with Republican Sen. Dave McCormick of Pennsylvania joining the president’s allies in supporting the administration’s decisive response.

Trump’s firm stance defended by Senate allies

Sen. McCormick, a veteran of the 82nd Airborne Division, praised the president’s effort to prevent Iran from acquiring a nuclear weapon. “I’ve been very supportive of the president’s actions to ensure Iran doesn’t have a nuclear weapon,” he told Fox News Sunday on Sept. 20. “It was a courageous decision, not an easy decision, but imagine the idea of Iran having a nuclear weapon on his watch, which I believe would have happened had we not intervened.” He added that U.S. economic pressure has already “made huge progress on diminishing their military” capabilities.

Fetterman’s lone dissent

Democratic Sen. John Fetterman was the only Democrat to vote against the resolution, aligning with the president’s position. While he did not issue a public statement after the vote, Fetterman has previously posted a screenshot of an Axios headline reading “Democrats demand war powers vote after U.S. strikes Iran,” responding, “Committed Democrat here. I’m a hard no. My vote is Operation Epic Fury.” His stance has drawn sharp criticism from fellow Democrats, including Rep. Chris Deluzio, who called the vote “reckless” and warned of the war’s cost to American lives and the economy.

Background on the War Powers Resolution

The 1973 War Powers Resolution requires that U.S. military operations wind down after 60 days unless Congress authorizes continued action. Since the legal deadline passed, the Senate has voted on the measure fourteen times, with most attempts failing by a single vote. The latest defeat keeps President Trump’s authority to continue operations against Iran intact.

Political context and polling

While the vote reflects strong support among Republican lawmakers for the president’s approach, recent polling in Pennsylvania shows the war is unpopular among voters. A New York Times/Philadelphia Inquirer/Siena poll of 615 respondents conducted Sept. 15‑22 found that only 31% of Pennsylvanians either strongly or somewhat approve of President Trump’s handling of the Iran conflict, while 67% disapprove. The poll’s margin of error and partisan composition were not disclosed.

Implications for the Senate and upcoming elections

The narrow margin underscores how pivotal each vote can be on foreign‑policy matters. Four Republicans crossed the aisle to support the resolution, indicating that some GOP senators remain wary of unchecked executive power. However, the administration’s allies argue that the president’s decisive action deters further aggression and protects American interests.

Looking ahead

Sen. Tim Kaine (D‑Va.) continues to push for a new War Powers Resolution, describing the Iran operation as “illegal” and urging the Senate to reconvene and vote on legislation that would block further use of U.S. forces. Meanwhile, Republican Senate candidates in battleground states, such as Michigan’s Mike Rogers and Iowa Rep. Ashley Hinson, have recently signaled a willingness to end the war, reflecting growing political pressure.

For now, President Trump’s military strategy against Iran remains unimpeded, backed by a majority of the Senate and reinforced by the administration’s narrative of protecting national security.
