Brunch at Esther Short Brewing’s Real Neighbor: The Grocery Café

You hear it before you see it. Coming down Main Street toward Uptown Village on a Saturday morning in June, there’s a low hum of conversation, a kid somewhere demanding a sample of something, and the specific scrape of a folding table being repositioned on concrete. The Uptown Village Farmers Market runs Saturdays from mid-April through late October, and if you show up around nine — not ten, not eleven — you get the whole thing before the crowds fold in behind you.

The market occupies a stretch of West 16th Street just off Main, in the same Uptown Village corridor that’s been slowly filling in with independent shops and restaurants over the past decade. It’s a neighborhood market in the truest sense: compact enough to walk in twenty minutes, personal enough that vendors remember your face by the third visit. Somewhere between forty and sixty vendors show up on a given Saturday, depending on the season, and the mix skews heavily toward food — produce from Clark County farms, cut flowers, mushrooms in paper bags, jams with handwritten labels.

What you’ll notice early is how much of this is actually local. Not “local” as marketing shorthand, but local in the sense that the person who grew the garlic is the one handing it to you. Kelli’s Berries usually has a table by late June, and their strawberries — the small, irregular ones that don’t travel well — taste completely different from anything you’ll find at a grocery store. A few tables down, there’s typically a vendor doing fresh-milled flour or heritage grain products. Pick up a bag and you’ll end up in a ten-minute conversation about wheat varieties if you’re not careful.

The prepared food side is worth planning around. Pacific Rim Naturals has shown up here for years with curry pastes and Southeast Asian sauces; their green papaya salad kit has become a personal Saturday ritual. There are usually two or three hot-food vendors — a tamale operation, something with crepes, occasionally bánh mì — and the picnic tables nearby fill up fast. Arrive hungry and budget an extra fifteen minutes just for eating.

Prices are honest. Salad greens run three to five dollars a bag. Specialty mushrooms — oyster, lion’s mane — are around eight to twelve dollars a pound. Flowers are generally cheaper here than at the grocery store and last longer. You can do a serious weekly shop for two people for under forty dollars if you’re focused.

The market is free to attend. Parking on the surrounding streets is generally findable before ten, and there’s a public lot one block west. After the market, the logical move is to walk the length of Uptown Village — several of the independent shops on Main open by ten on Saturdays, and a couple of the coffee spots do a brisk business off market overflow traffic.

It’s not a destination in the tourism brochure sense. Nobody’s putting it on a highlights reel. But for understanding what a Vancouver Saturday actually feels like — unhurried, familiar, rooted in the specific geography of the Columbia River Valley — this market gives you more in two hours than most planned activities manage in a full day.
