Pope Leo XIV shares love for Chicago White Sox and college basketball

While traveling to France, Pope Leo XIV was asked whether he had a hand in the Chicago White Sox’s surprising return to the playoffs. The pontiff answered with a friendly “No comment,” but added, “Great things happen in Chicago,” making clear his excitement for the team he has followed since childhood.

Pope’s broader sports interests

Leo XIV, the first pope born in the United States, has a long history of speaking about sports. In June he reminded the world that “the pope is for all teams,” though he sparked a stir among soccer fans in Barcelona by noting his personal support for Real Madrid, a rivalry that many consider one of the sport’s fiercest.

Real Madrid later posted the exchange, and some social‑media users described the club as “the team of God.” The pope’s remarks were intended to be diplomatic, emphasizing that his role is to serve all believers, regardless of their favorite team.

College basketball in Rome

When asked about upcoming basketball events, Leo XIV said the “voice of the people of God” would be cheering loudly for Villanova University, his alma mater where he studied mathematics in the 1970s. He explained that the audience for the November 1 double‑header in Rome is expected to be about 90 % Villanova fans and 10 % Notre Dame supporters, giving Villanova a strong advantage.

The matchup is being promoted by Catholic schools as a celebration of shared mission and heritage. Leo’s predecessor, Pope Robert Prevost, also graduated from an Augustinian school near Philadelphia with a degree in mathematics, underscoring the long‑standing connection between faith and education.

Tennis, swimming and horseback riding

Beyond team sports, the 71‑year‑old pontiff enjoys playing tennis, although he admits his duties limit his time on the court. In a 2023 interview with the Augustinian Order, he described himself as an “amateur tennis player.” He often spends Mondays and Tuesdays at the papal retreat in Castel Gandolfo, where he plays tennis with his secretary, Monsignor Edgard Iván Rimaycuna Inga, and also swims and rides horses.

Last year, Leo XIV granted a private audience to top‑ranked tennis star Jannik Sinner, but politely declined Sinner’s invitation for a quick volley, saying, “Better not,” after looking around at the historic surroundings.

Faith and sport together

Leo XIV’s comments illustrate how the Vatican can engage with popular culture while remaining rooted in its spiritual mission. By acknowledging the passions of fans in Chicago, Barcelona and Rome, the pope demonstrates a pastoral approach that embraces the joys of everyday life, including sports, as a way to connect with people worldwide.
