NHL Sees Significant Increase in Female Viewership During Stanley Cup Playoffs

The NHL’s Stanley Cup Playoffs have reached new heights in viewership, with a notable surge in female fans tuning in. This year, the first two rounds have become the most-watched in U.S. league history, largely due to a significant increase in female viewership. TNT Sports reported a 66% rise, while ESPN noted a 106% increase, particularly among the 18-to-34 age group.

Factors Driving the Increase

Several factors have contributed to this growth in female viewership. The success of the 4 Nations Face-Off tournament and the U.S. men’s and women’s gold medal wins at the Olympics have played a significant role. Additionally, the quality of play, an influx of young talent, and the viral popularity of hockey-themed romance shows like “Heated Rivalry” and “Off Campus” have attracted more women to the sport.

Linda Schulz, ESPN’s VP of production, highlighted the challenge of attracting new fans to hockey, a sport not commonly played by many. However, she emphasized the importance of retaining these new fans by offering engaging content. Craig Barry, TNT Sports’ executive VP, noted that the alignment of various factors has led to the dramatic increase in female viewership.

Technological and Social Media Influence

The NHL has also embraced technology and social media to draw in younger audiences. Aerial sky cams and on-ice camera operators capture the speed and emotion of the game, enhancing the viewing experience. Social media platforms like TikTok have been instrumental in reaching a broader audience, with many top videos being viewed by more women than men.

Stephen McArdle, NHL’s COO, acknowledged the role of fictional series as gateways to the sport, emphasizing the need to welcome new audiences and guide them through their hockey journey. The NHL’s strategy of promoting broadcasts across multiple platforms, including ESPN, ABC, TNT, TruTV, and HBO Max, ensures that fans can access games wherever they prefer to watch.

The NHL’s efforts to engage a diverse audience, particularly women, have proven successful, as evidenced by the record-breaking viewership numbers during this year’s Stanley Cup Playoffs.
