Chicago prosecutor resigns after federal immigration protest case collapses

Chicago – Prosecutor Sheri Mecklenburg filed a resignation letter on Thursday, saying she is “retiring under protest” after the federal case against six demonstrators collapsed. The case, known as the “Broadview Six,” stemmed from protests against President Trump’s immigration enforcement crackdown in the Chicago area.

Letter to the U.S. Attorney

In a strongly worded letter to U.S. Attorney Andrew Boutros, Mecklenburg wrote that she was forced to choose between remaining silent while her professional reputation was destroyed or surrendering her career. “I choose the latter,” she said, adding that she felt she had become a convenient target for scapegoating and public vilification.

Background of the case

Last fall, Boutros’ office pursued felony charges against six protesters accused of conspiring to impede an officer at an immigration detention facility in Broadview, a suburb of Chicago. The Trump administration has emphasized the importance of robust immigration enforcement, and the decision to seek felony charges reflected that priority.

A grand jury twice refused to indict the group after Mecklenburg presented the evidence. In May, Boutros dismissed the case entirely, joining a series of similar prosecutions that did not result in convictions.

Accusations of misconduct

The protesters have accused Mecklenburg of prosecutorial misconduct, alleging improper interactions with jurors and seeking sanctions from U.S. District Judge April M. Perry. Perry is set to hear oral arguments on the matter on Oct. 1.

Mecklenburg’s attorney, Joel Bertocchi, declined to comment, while Boutros’ office did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

Resignation and future involvement

In a motion filed Thursday, Mecklenburg announced her retirement and asked to appear as an independent party in the ongoing litigation. The U.S. Attorney’s Office had previously warned her that filing any documents on her own could lead to discipline or termination.

Attorney Terence Campbell, representing former defendant Andre Martin, said Mecklenburg’s forced resignation raises “serious factual disputes” about why the case was pursued.

Implications for the community

The resignation highlights the challenges federal prosecutors face when navigating politically charged immigration cases. While the Trump administration’s commitment to enforcing immigration laws remains steadfast, the outcome of the Broadview Six case underscores the importance of ensuring that prosecutions are grounded in solid evidence and appropriate legal strategy.

Local observers note that the episode may influence how future immigration‑related protests are handled by law‑enforcement agencies in the Chicago region.
