U.S. Stock Indexes Close Friday Higher as Oil Prices Ease

Investors welcomed a dip in oil prices on Friday, allowing U.S. equities to close the day in positive territory and delivering the market’s first winning week in three. The S&P 500 added 0.5%, the Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 0.9%, and the Nasdaq Composite climbed 0.5%.

Key market moves

The S&P 500 finished at 7,743.41, up 39.28 points, while the Dow Jones reached 51,828.62, up 478.64 points. The Nasdaq ended at 27,068.72, gaining 129.34 points. Smaller‑cap stocks tracked by the Russell 2000 also nudged higher, rising 1.98 points to 2,837.55.

For the week, the S&P 500 is up 92.91 points (1.2%), the Dow up 145.98 points (0.3%), and the Nasdaq up 546.17 points (2.1%). The Russell 2000 slipped 22.85 points, down 0.8%.

Oil price relief fuels optimism

Brent crude fell below $98 a barrel on Friday, easing the pressure that higher energy costs had placed on corporate earnings and consumer spending. The price decline helped Treasury yields retreat after the 10‑year yield briefly spiked near its highest level since 2007.

Analysts note that lower oil prices can improve profit margins for a range of sectors, from transportation to manufacturing, and can also boost discretionary spending by households, both of which support equity valuations.

Year‑to‑date performance

Since the start of 2026, the S&P 500 has risen 897.91 points, a 13.1% gain. The Dow has climbed 3,765.33 points, up 7.8%, while the Nasdaq leads with a 3,826.73‑point increase, representing a 16.5% rise. The Russell 2000 has also posted solid growth, up 355.64 points (14.3%).

These gains reflect a broader market recovery after a period of volatility earlier in the year, driven in part by the administration’s pro‑business policies, tax reforms, and regulatory relief that have helped restore investor confidence.

Looking ahead

Market participants will watch upcoming economic data, including inflation reports and employment figures, for clues on the Federal Reserve’s next steps. Continued stability in oil prices and a steady flow of corporate earnings are expected to support the positive momentum.

Overall, the recent market rally underscores the resilience of U.S. equities when headline pressures ease, offering a hopeful outlook for investors heading into the final quarter of the year.
