A newly-constructed duplex in Spokane Valley experienced an unexpected lightning strike that led to a fire on Thursday night. Fortunately, the building was unoccupied, and no injuries were reported.
Swift Response from Firefighters
The Spokane Valley Fire Department responded promptly to the incident on S. Houk Road. Firefighters arrived around 8:46 p.m. to find flames and smoke emanating from the roof. The second-alarm fire required crews to cut ventilation holes in the roof to release heat and smoke, while others worked inside to extinguish the flames.
The fire was brought under control within 30 minutes, with the department confirming by 9:24 p.m. that the fire had not spread beyond its original location. Firefighters also removed drywall from the ceiling to fully extinguish the fire inside.
Uncommon Incident
According to investigators, the fire was caused by the lightning strike energizing wires within the building, sending high voltage throughout and igniting a fire in the roof assembly area. Such incidents are rare in the Spokane region, with only four lightning-related home fires reported since 2019, including two during the recent storm.
The scene was handed over to the property owner by 11:14 p.m. The Spokane Valley Fire Department emphasized the importance of calling 911 immediately if smoke or flames are observed, as early notification can help protect life and property.
