District 8 hopefuls Gary McCoy and Darshini Patel form ranked‑choice alliance

San Francisco – In a move aimed at strengthening their bid for the District 8 supervisor seat, candidates Gary McCoy and Darshini Patel announced a mutual ranked‑choice endorsement on Friday. Both candidates asked voters to place the other on the second line of their ballot, hoping the city’s ranked‑choice system will transfer votes if either is eliminated early.

How ranked‑choice voting works in San Francisco

Under the city’s ranked‑choice system, the candidate with the fewest first‑choice votes is removed from the race and those ballots are reallocated to the next preferred candidate listed. This process repeats until a candidate secures more than 50 percent of the vote.

Why the alliance matters

By encouraging supporters to rank each other second, McCoy and Patel aim to keep progressive votes within their camp, preventing them from being split among multiple challengers. The strategy could be especially beneficial for McCoy, a former aide to Rep. Nancy Pelosi, who is currently viewed as a frontrunner alongside Manny Yekutiel.

Yekutiel, who runs a political café and event space, has raised the most money in the race and secured several high‑profile endorsements. Michael Nguyen, a patent attorney and drag‑queen activist, is also in the field, running on a progressive platform that opposes upzoning and the city’s use of Flock license‑plate reader cameras.

Candidate backgrounds

Gary McCoy brings experience from both policy work and City Hall, having served as a staffer for Rep. Pelosi. He emphasizes a focus on housing affordability, public safety, and support for small businesses. “Darshini and I agree: we need a City Hall that gets the basics right,” McCoy said in a statement.

Darshini Patel, a former tech professional and presidential campaign staffer, entered the race as a longshot but has built a grassroots network and a door‑to‑door canvassing operation. She recently earned the endorsement of the SF Solidarity Club, a new political club that plans to mobilize volunteers on her behalf. “Gary has a wealth of experience, both from his time working in policy and working in City Hall, and from his own personal experiences, to be able to advocate for District 8 well and serve the needs of the community,” Patel said.

Policy overlap and differences

Both McCoy and Patel have run YIMBY‑style campaigns, supporting upzoning to allow taller buildings and opposing the San Francisco Police Department’s use of Flock license‑plate reader cameras. Their shared platform aligns on key issues such as expanding affordable housing, improving public safety, and fostering a business‑friendly environment for local merchants.

Yekutiel, by contrast, runs a more traditional moderate campaign, backing market‑rate housing development, supporting police surveillance tools, and advocating a tough‑on‑crime stance. Nguyen’s platform also leans progressive, opposing upzoning out of concern for displacement and rejecting the city’s license‑plate reader program.

Impact on the race

The alliance does not automatically guarantee a win, but it could reshape the dynamics of the District 8 contest. If either McCoy or Patel is eliminated in the early rounds, the transferred votes may give the remaining ally a decisive edge over Yekutiel and Nguyen.

Nguyen has publicly criticized Yekutiel at recent debates but has chosen not to join the McCoy‑Patel alliance, according to a spokesperson for McCoy.

What voters should know

San Francisco’s ranked‑choice voting system rewards coalition‑building and strategic ranking. Voters in District 8 are encouraged to consider not only their first‑choice candidate but also how their subsequent rankings could influence the final outcome.

All four candidates will continue to campaign on the issues that matter most to residents: housing, safety, and support for local businesses. The upcoming weeks will see more community forums, door‑to‑door outreach, and debates as the race heads toward the primary election.
