Mississippi autopsy reports Nolan Wells’ death as undetermined

Mississippi officials released the official autopsy findings for 18‑year‑old Nolan Wells, who disappeared during a July 4th boat outing on Horn Island. The State Medical Examiner’s report classifies both the cause and manner of death as “undetermined,” mirroring conclusions from a private autopsy commissioned by the family earlier this summer.

Key findings from the state report

The examiner noted that Wells was found face‑down in the water at Horn Island. A forensic pathologist identified “two dark red‑purple subcutaneous scalp contusions” on the back of his head, describing them as evidence of injury. No external scalp injuries or skull fractures were observed, and the report does not specify how the contusions occurred.

Because the circumstances surrounding the death remain unknown, the examiner determined that classifying the death as undetermined is the most accurate approach. This language reflects the limited forensic evidence available at this stage of the investigation.

Legal review and family response

A grand jury that examined the evidence earlier this month concluded that no criminal charges are warranted at this point. Jackson County Sheriff John Ledbetter reiterated that investigators are “working diligently to determine exactly what occurred,” while also noting that there is currently no indication of a crime.

Wells’ mother, Christine Wonsley, expressed her heartbreak at the loss of her son, saying, “Losing a child truly breaks your heart… especially someone like Nolan, who brought so much joy and light to everyone.” She added, “The only question we have is, what happened to our son?” The family’s independent autopsy, released in July, also listed the death as undetermined pending further investigation.

What we know about the incident

Wells, a college football player, went missing after a July 4th boat trip with friends. Authorities believe he remained on Horn Island after his companions departed. His body was recovered on July 6, and officials initially suspected drowning, though the autopsy did not confirm a definitive cause.

The sheriff’s office has welcomed the family’s independent investigation and continues to cooperate with state medical examiners and law‑enforcement agencies. As the investigation proceeds, officials encourage anyone with information to contact the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office.

Community impact

The tragedy has resonated throughout the local community, prompting calls for increased safety measures for water‑related activities during holiday outings. While the investigation remains open, local leaders emphasize the importance of vigilance and cooperation with law‑enforcement to prevent similar incidents.
