Survey Finds 1,000 U.S. Moms Struggle with a “Sleep Permission Gap”

Motherhood is a full‑time calling, and a recent national survey commissioned by Naturepedic and Wakefield Research reveals that many U.S. moms feel they need permission to rest. The study interviewed 1,000 mothers between the ages of 25 and 45 about their sleep habits, feelings of guilt, and the spaces where they try to catch a few hours of shut‑eye.

The “Sleep Permission Gap” Explained

Researchers label the disconnect between a mother’s knowledge that she deserves rest and the feeling that she must earn it the “sleep permission gap.” The gap mirrors a well‑documented behavioral pattern called moral licensing, first described by Stanford scholars Anna Merritt, Daniel Effron, and Benoît Monin in 2010. Moral licensing suggests that after a day of caregiving, work, and household duties, many people—especially mothers—feel they must “pay off” their good deeds before they can indulge in something as basic as sleep.

How Much Rest Are Moms Getting?

According to the survey, 27 % of respondents report getting six hours of sleep each night and another 27 % report seven hours. Overall, 48 % of the mothers surveyed get less than the seven‑to‑nine‑hour range recommended for adults.

Waking Up Tired Is the Norm

Even among those who log a full night in bed, 83 % say they usually wake up feeling unrested. While 38 % believe they can function on less sleep than other adults, more than 60 % acknowledge that mothers need about the same amount of sleep as anyone else—though they rarely achieve it.

Maternal Vigilance Keeps Moms on Alert

The survey cites research on “maternal vigilance,” a heightened state of alertness that helps mothers detect a child’s needs even while they are supposed to be sleeping. A 2023 study in the journal Sleep tracked 232 couples from pregnancy through the first year postpartum and found mothers consistently recorded poorer sleep quality than fathers, with roughly 70 % showing sub‑clinical insomnia compared with about 50 % of fathers.

Further, a 2022 daily‑diary study linked night‑to‑night drops in mothers’ sleep quality to increased feelings of strain in caregiving the next day. Developmental neuroscientist Pilyoung Kim’s 2016 review suggests structural and functional brain changes during the postpartum period may heighten responsiveness to infant cues, even during rest.

Where Moms Are Trying to Sleep

Because the bedroom often serves multiple purposes, 94 % of respondents have fallen asleep somewhere other than their own bed—most commonly on the sofa or a comfortable chair (82 %) or in a child’s bed (56 %). The survey also found that 66 % view the bed as a personal sanctuary, yet it doubles as a laundry‑folding zone (53 %), a family meeting spot (35 %), a play area (27 %), a workspace (22 %), and even a homework station for kids (16 %).

What Moms Say Would Help

When asked what would most improve their sleep, mothers did not ask for more emotional support. Instead, 59 % want household chores taken over, and 58 % simply want the freedom to sleep in. Other top suggestions include a more comfortable mattress and bedding (54 %), assistance with kids’ bedtime routines (49 %), a relaxing bedroom environment (48 %), and help with morning routines (47 %).

Implications for Families and Communities

The findings underscore a clear need for families, churches, and community organizations to recognize the hidden burden of maternal vigilance and the guilt many mothers feel about taking rest. By encouraging shared household responsibilities and creating bedroom spaces dedicated solely to sleep, families can help close the sleep permission gap and support the health of both mothers and children.

As the nation continues to value strong families and individual liberty, acknowledging and addressing this sleep disparity aligns with the broader goal of fostering thriving, faith‑grounded households.
