Georgia Tech Dominates UIC in NCAA Baseball Tournament Opener

In a thrilling start to the NCAA baseball tournament’s Atlanta regional, Georgia Tech’s Yellow Jackets showcased their offensive prowess with a decisive 22-5 victory over the University of Illinois Chicago (UIC). Despite UIC’s early 2-0 lead, thanks to a home run by first baseman Will Flanigan, Georgia Tech quickly turned the tide.

Georgia Tech’s Offensive Surge

The Yellow Jackets, seeded No. 2 in the tournament, responded with an impressive display of batting strength, scoring 17 runs over the next three innings. Alex Hernandez tied the game with his tenth home run of the season, and Parker Brosius, son of former MLB player Scott Brosius, gave Georgia Tech the lead with a home run to right center.

The team’s momentum continued in the second inning, highlighted by a powerful home run from catcher Vahn Lackey, a top prospect for the upcoming MLB Draft. Lackey’s hit, estimated at over 456 feet, landed on the football team’s practice facility, underscoring the team’s dominance.

Record-Breaking Performance

Georgia Tech’s lineup combined for 22 hits and seven home runs, marking only the third time in program history they scored 20 or more runs in an NCAA tournament game. Hernandez added a grand slam in the fourth inning and a three-run shot in the sixth, further cementing the Yellow Jackets’ commanding lead.

UIC managed to add a few more runs with Flanigan’s second home run and a two-run shot by Jake Busson, but it was not enough to challenge Georgia Tech’s overwhelming performance.

Looking ahead, Georgia Tech will face the winner of the Oklahoma vs. The Citadel matchup, while UIC will compete in an elimination game against the loser of that contest.
