Caddo Magnet senior Michael Nix honored with national JROTC Bronze Cross award

Shreveport, La. – Caddo Magnet High School senior Michael Nix has been recognized with the Bronze Cross for Achievement, the nation’s highest honor for JROTC cadets. Established in 1951, the Bronze Cross celebrates cadets who excel in military training, classroom performance and community service.

Leadership across the parish

After a rigorous review by the Cadet Leadership Board, Nix was appointed Caddo JROTC Corps Commander, a role that places him in charge of all JROTC cadets throughout the parish school system. In conjunction with his promotion to cadet colonel, he now oversees the development of hundreds of young leaders, ensuring they receive the mentorship and discipline that the program promotes.

Historic national competition performance

Nix also captained Caddo Magnet’s JROTC leadership team, guiding teammates Angelisse Griffin, Kait Kerney and Athan Ballis to a 13th‑place finish at the Level 3 Bowl Championship in Washington, D.C. The competition marked the first time a Caddo JROTC team qualified for the leadership division of the national event, highlighting the program’s rapid growth under Nix’s direction.

Academic excellence and research experience

Beyond his military and leadership duties, Nix was named a National Merit Semifinalist, reflecting his strong academic record. He also completed the High School Summer Research Program at the LSU College of Engineering, where he studied artificial‑intelligence security and system manipulation, gaining valuable experience in a field critical to national defense and future technology.

Community impact and future outlook

School officials and local leaders praised Nix’s achievements as a testament to the values of hard work, faith, and family that the Caddo Magnet community upholds. “Michael embodies the best of what our JROTC program strives to develop – disciplined leadership, academic rigor, and a commitment to serving others,” said Colonel (Ret.) James Hernandez, the school’s JROTC senior instructor.

The Bronze Cross award and the team’s national showing bring positive attention to Caddo Magnet and the broader Caddo Parish school system, encouraging other students to pursue similar paths of service and scholarship. Nix plans to attend a four‑year university where he hopes to continue studying cybersecurity and to remain involved in ROTC programs.

What this means for the community

Recognition of a local student on a national stage reinforces the importance of investing in youth programs that blend character development with academic excellence. Parents, educators and community members are urged to support continued funding for JROTC and related extracurricular activities, which help shape the next generation of responsible citizens and leaders.
