Sully Sullenberger Opens Up About Early‑Stage Alzheimer’s Diagnosis

Philadelphia‑area viewers heard Capt. Chesley “Sully” Sullenberger speak with Good Morning America co‑anchor Robin Roberts about his recent diagnosis of early‑stage Alzheimer’s disease. The 75‑year‑old former airline captain, famed for the 2009 emergency landing on the Hudson River, said the experience of planning and executing that lifesaving maneuver helped him approach his health challenge with a clear, step‑by‑step mindset.

Family shares early symptoms and coping plan

Sullenberger described the initial signs he noticed – occasional forgetfulness, difficulty recalling names, and the need to repeat himself – as “easy to dismiss” at first. His wife, Lorrie Sullenberger, echoed that sentiment, noting that many news stories focus on late‑stage symptoms, which can make early warning signs seem insignificant.

Both emphasized the importance of recognizing subtle changes. “If something feels unusual for your loved one, pay attention,” Lorrie advised, urging families to stay vigilant.

Why speaking out matters

The couple originally planned to keep the diagnosis private, but decided to share their story to help others facing similar circumstances. “This is a disease, not a character flaw,” Lorrie said, adding that open conversation can reduce stigma and encourage early testing.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Alzheimer’s affects roughly 7 million Americans and is the seventh‑leading cause of death among adults. Early detection can allow individuals to access treatments that may slow progression, though no cure exists.

Treatment and outlook

Sully reported that he is receiving monthly infusion therapy aimed at slowing disease progression. He acknowledged that the condition is “continuing to progress” and described it as “inevitable,” but expressed hope that proactive care can improve quality of life.

The Sullenbergers also discussed the emotional impact on caregivers. Lorrie said her plan is to take each day as it comes, while Sully expressed concern about the burden on his wife as the disease advances.

Family priorities and upcoming honor

Despite the challenges, the family is focusing on spending time together. Their daughter, Kelly, noted that their family’s habit of planning runs in their blood, but some things simply cannot be scheduled.

Later this week, Sully will be inducted into the National Aviation Hall of Fame in Washington, D.C., an honor he described as a “great honor.” He hopes that, just as his 2009 Hudson River landing made a difference, his openness about Alzheimer’s can inspire others to act.

Looking ahead

When asked about his greatest concern, Sullenberger used an aviation metaphor, saying, “If this has to be my last flight, I’m going to go out using full afterburner.” His message underscores a resolve to face the disease with the same determination he showed in the cockpit.
