Spain Park High School’s volleyball program enjoyed a busy and successful week, finishing the stretch with an 8-2 record. The Jaguars opened Thursday with a road loss at Jasper before embarking on a dominant run through the HeffStrong Tournament, racking up seven straight victories and closing the week with a 3-1 win over Thompson on Tuesday.
Record‑breaking performance
Senior libero Camdyn Kyes was the centerpiece of the week’s achievements, surpassing the previous career digs record of 1,344 held by former standout Audrey Rothman. Kyes now sits at 1,345 digs and counting, a milestone that underscores his consistency and defensive skill throughout his high school career.
Team highlights
The Jaguars’ tournament run featured wins over West Blocton, Lipscomb Academy, Clay‑Chalkville, West Morgan, Muscle Shoals, Homewood and Houston. Their only tournament loss came at the hands of Spanish Fort. Across the stretch, the team’s offensive firepower was led by Peyton Harrington, who posted 98 kills, 56 digs and 12 aces. Chloe Shumate contributed 94 kills and 12 blocks, while Sarah Latham added 45 kills and 19 blocks. Setter Lynlee Franks ran the offense with 108 assists and 28 digs, and Kyes himself chipped in 91 digs, 22 assists and 13 aces.

Hoover’s broader volleyball scene
Across town, the Hoover volleyball squad experienced a mixed week. After a 3‑0 loss to Auburn on September 17, the team rebounded with a 3‑1 showing at a tournament in Panama City, Florida, defeating Arnold, Wakulla and Grace Christian Academy before falling to FSUHS. Hoover then dropped a road match at Hewitt‑Trussville 3‑1 on September 22. The Bulldogs will face Mountain Brook on Thursday and host Vestavia Hills on September 29.
