Algoma School District Boosts Fuel Budget by $11,000 Amid Record Diesel Prices

Algoma, Wisconsin – The Algoma School District is confronting soaring diesel costs that are straining its transportation budget. With diesel averaging $6.61 a gallon, the district has added $11,000 to its fuel allocation for the 2026‑27 school year, raising the transportation fuel budget from $37,000 to $48,000 – an increase of roughly 30%.

Budget adjustments to protect student travel

Superintendent Jesse Brinkmann explained that the district’s six buses are operated directly by the district, and the sudden jump in fuel prices forced a series of tough decisions. “Seeing where costs are at right now, we felt it was necessary to just prepare for the future,” Brinkmann said. “It’s unknown how long the fuel costs will be at this rate, but we want to make sure that we’re set up for what’s to come.”

To offset the higher fuel expense, the district has reduced the number of driver positions and consolidated routes. The city route, which previously ran separately, has been merged into the three existing rural routes, allowing each rural route to pick up city students before and after school. This consolidation also meant the district cut the total number of bus routes from four to three.

Impact on extracurricular activities and staffing

Brinkmann warned that diverting additional funds to transportation could limit resources for other student programs. “Shoveling more money into transportation could mean fewer opportunities for students,” he said, referencing potential cuts to athletics, after‑school activities, and even staff positions.

The district is exploring ways to stretch the budget further. One idea under consideration is combining varsity and junior‑variety (JV) teams onto a single bus rather than operating two separate routes for each group. This approach aims to preserve essential travel for extracurricular events while keeping costs manageable.

Comparison with neighboring districts

While Algoma manages its own fleet, larger districts such as Green Bay and Appleton contract with private operators like Lamers Bus Lines. Those districts have locked in transportation rates, insulating them from the current diesel surge, and report no immediate additional cost impacts.

In contrast, Algoma’s reliance on its own buses makes it more vulnerable to fuel price volatility. The district’s school board is set to review and approve the revised budget in October, where officials will weigh the trade‑offs between transportation needs and other educational priorities.

Broader fuel market context

Diesel prices in Wisconsin have hit a record high, according to the American Automobile Association (AAA), while regular unleaded gasoline remains more stable at a statewide average of $4.42 per gallon. Residents can monitor local fuel prices through services such as GasBuddy.com.

Despite the financial strain, the Algoma School District remains committed to ensuring that students have reliable transportation to and from school, a cornerstone of community stability and parental peace of mind.
