President Trump pushes Roadless Rule rescission to improve wildfire management

In mid‑August 2026, the Trump administration filed a proposed rule and draft environmental impact statement to rescind the Roadless Rule, a 2001 regulation that limits road construction, logging and mining on roughly 59 million acres of public land. The filing launched a 30‑day public comment period beginning Aug. 18, giving communities a chance to weigh in.

Administration’s rationale

U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Brooke Rollins told reporters the rescission is intended to give local managers the tools they need to address wildfire risk more effectively. “By returning control to the states and local partners, we can target fuel‑treatment projects and create critical access points for firefighters,” Rollins said. The administration argues that existing road networks are insufficient for rapid response and that more flexible land‑management authority will help protect both lives and property.

Rural voices raise concerns

Many rural residents, however, contend that the Roadless Rule has been a cornerstone of their economies and way of life. In Washington’s Methow Valley, program director Lorah Super of the Methow Valley Citizens Council warned that new roads could actually increase fire danger. “If a fire is caused by humans, it usually starts next to a road and spreads from there,” she explained, echoing research from the Global Wildfire Collective that identifies roads as the most common ignition points for human‑caused fires.

Research cited in the draft impact statement supports both sides. A 2026 Headwaters Economics study found that 77 % of wildfires between 1992 and 2024 were ignited by humans, and a separate analysis noted that roads can serve as firebreaks and staging areas for crews. Yet the same scientists cautioned that road building often introduces invasive, highly flammable species and can degrade watersheds that support endangered salmon.

Local management already in place

Super emphasized that the Methow Valley community has already taken proactive steps, completing a community wildfire protection plan and collaborating with the Okanogan‑Wenatchee National Forest on a landscape‑level assessment that includes thinning in inventoried roadless areas. “We don’t need to rescind the Roadless Rule to manage our forests,” she said. “We’re already invested in forest health and fire prevention.”

Mining and logging perspectives

In New Mexico’s Gila National Forest, the Roadless Rule protects over 700,000 acres. While the rule does not outright ban mining, local resident Luke Koenig of New Mexico Wild noted that it makes new mining projects “a lot more difficult.” He argued that extractive industries are a primary driver behind the administration’s push to roll back the protections.

Conversely, third‑generation logger Bruce Vincent from northwest Montana described how existing road networks in the Kootenai National Forest already provide sufficient access for fire suppression and habitat management. “Areas without roads weren’t built for a reason – there was no commercial value,” he said, adding that current roads help protect the wildland‑urban interface.

What’s at stake?

If rescinded, the rule would open roughly 45 million acres to new roads, logging, mining and potential privatization. Proponents argue this flexibility will enable faster wildfire response and local economic development. Opponents fear loss of pristine habitats, increased wildfire risk, and damage to tourism‑dependent economies that rely on the scenic, road‑free landscapes.

The public comment period will close in early September, and the administration has pledged to consider all feedback before finalizing the rule. As the debate unfolds, rural communities across the West, New England and Appalachia will watch closely to see whether the promised benefits of local control outweigh the potential environmental costs.
