Shreveport families and outdoor enthusiasts have a reason to celebrate on Saturday, Oct. 3, when Fox Creek Farms opens its fields for the biennial Great 5K and Paddlefest. The community‑focused event gives participants the choice of a 5K run or walk, a 2‑mile paddle on the farm’s lake, or a combination of both activities.
Schedule and Activities
The 5K run and walk will kick off at 8 a.m., followed by the paddle race at 9 a.m. A free kids’ run for children ten and under is slated for 9:15 a.m., ensuring even the youngest members of the community can join the fun.
After the races, a post‑race party runs from 10:15 a.m. to noon. Attendees can enjoy food from Ki' Mexico, live music by the Everett Street Band, and a chance to win prizes. Non‑racers may purchase party tickets for $15.
Supporting a Worthy Cause
All proceeds benefit The Arc Caddo‑Bossier’s GREAT (Equine Assisted Services) program. The nonprofit provides private lessons, school programs and summer camps that use horses to help children, teens and adults with disabilities develop confidence, skills and joy.
“The funds raised from this event help us continue equine education and experiences for people with disabilities, feed and house our horses, and continue the high‑quality services GREAT has been known for providing since 1997,” said Caroline Hendrix, director of GREAT. “We can see, on a daily basis, the difference this program makes in the lives of the people we serve.”
Kristen Powers, chief executive officer of The Arc Caddo‑Bossier, echoed the sentiment, noting that the program has offered “unique opportunities for people with disabilities to build confidence, develop skills, and experience the joy of working with horses” for nearly three decades.
Family‑Friendly Extras
A new kids and family area will feature a petting zoo, hobby horse races and face painting, creating a festive atmosphere for families. Participants can also enter a raffle with five prizes, including a Bote paddleboard, original artwork by Taffie Garsee, a Nieven Morgan gift set, a book basket curated by Jennifer Moorhead, and a spa package from Jade MediSpa and My Friend’s Place Beauty Salon.
Logistics
Paddlers may bring their own equipment or rent a board, kayak or canoe on site for $20 by calling Caroline Hendrix at (318) 564‑5769. Lifejackets are required for all water participants. Registration remains open through Oct. 3.
