First responders found what they described as suspected military‑type and homemade explosives at the property where 40‑year‑old Robert Chapman, who died by drowning in Canyon Lake on Aug. 30, had lived.
Bomb squad called in for safe disposal
After an initial assessment by sheriff deputies and fire marshals, the county determined a bomb squad was needed to evaluate the materials and identify the safest disposal method. The Austin Police Department Bomb Squad was summoned and concluded that controlled detonations would be the most secure way to neutralize the explosives.
Precautionary measures for residents
A shelter‑in‑place notification was sent to nearby residents, warning them of increased first‑responder presence and the possibility of hearing explosions during the controlled detonations. Hays County emphasized that there is no ongoing threat to the public near the Wimberley home.
