Mets shut down first baseman Jared Young for season after concussion

New York – The New York Mets have placed first baseman Jared Young on the season‑ending injured list after he suffered a concussion in a Thursday night collision with teammate pitcher Nolan McLean. The injury occurred in the sixth inning of the Mets’ 3‑0 defeat at the hands of the Philadelphia Phillies.

Collision and immediate aftermath

Young was knocked unconscious briefly when McLean, moving to cover first base on a dribbler hit by Justin Crawford, stepped over a nearly prone Young and inadvertently kneed him in the head. Young remained on the field for an extended period before being loaded onto a stretcher and taken to a nearby hospital.

Recovery outlook

Interim manager Andy Green said Young is “as good as could be expected and hoped for” given the circumstances and that the medical team’s reports are “really optimistic” regarding his recovery. Green added, “Very optimistic about recovery and continuing to play going forward. There’s no concerns in that space.”

Green also noted that Young is dealing with short‑term memory issues and headaches but remains in good spirits, giving a thumbs‑up to the crowd as he was carted off the field.

Roster moves

Following Young’s placement on the seven‑day injured list, the Mets recalled infielder Ronny Mauricio from Triple‑A Syracuse to fill the roster spot. Mauricio, 25, has appeared in 17 games this season, posting a .180 batting average with one home run and two RBIs.

Young’s season and career stats

Before the injury, Young was batting .266 with nine home runs and 39 RBIs over 103 games. The 31‑year‑old began his major‑league career with the Chicago Cubs in 2022 and 2023 before joining the Mets prior to the 2025 season. In 147 career games, he has a .249 average with 15 home runs and 53 RBIs.

Team perspective

Green expressed relief that the situation appears under control and emphasized the team’s confidence in Young’s eventual return to the field. “I am relieved. I think everybody is,” he said, underscoring the organization’s supportive stance toward the player’s health and recovery.

The Mets will continue their season without Young, hoping to maintain competitive play while prioritizing the health of their athletes.
