Princess Diana’s iconic “revenge dress” to be auctioned after London exhibition

The famed black silk dress that Princess Diana chose to wear on June 29, 1994 – the night Prince Charles publicly acknowledged his infidelity – is back in the spotlight. After a brief public showing at Sotheby’s London, the gown will travel to Hong Kong and Geneva before being offered for sale at Sotheby’s New York on Dec. 9.

Why the dress matters

Sotheby’s global head of handbags and fashion, Morgane Halimi, said the dress was a “beautiful and powerful outfit” that Diana used to seize control of her own story. “She always used fashion as a way of expression, but this time it was a way to communicate her personal expression of herself,” Halimi explained. “The way she felt on that day is that, ‘I’m taking back the story and I’m here and I stand for myself.’”

Exhibition and auction details

The dress, designed by Greek designer Christina Stambolian, will be on display in London until Sept. 24. Afterward it joins a short tour that includes stops in Hong Kong and Geneva. Sotheby’s estimates a presale value of $150,000‑$300,000, though experts say the final price could exceed that range.

In 1997 Diana sold the dress along with other garments to raise money for AIDS charities. A life‑size wax replica of her in the dress was unveiled at a Paris museum last year, underscoring the gown’s lasting cultural impact.

Historical context

When Diana wore the off‑the‑shoulder, figure‑hugging dress at a gala in London’s Serpentine Gallery, the world watched the royal family’s turmoil unfold. The following year she admitted to her own extramarital affair, famously noting “there were three of us in this marriage.” Charles and Diana divorced in 1996, and Diana’s tragic death in 1997 left the dress as a symbol of her resilience.

Halimi added, “I personally believe that this dress is the most powerful item linked to Diana. The Diana provenance always attracts collectors, and the story of this dress and its universal message will definitely attract institutions as well as private collectors looking for unique, one‑of‑a‑kind pieces.”
