Disney to add 5,000 jobs in Central Florida over next five years

Walt Disney World Resort announced a plan to add 5,000 jobs in Central Florida over the next five years. The expansion follows recent corporate restructuring and layoffs, and it reflects CEO Josh D’Amaro’s focus on streamlining operations while still investing in the region’s workforce.

Training and career pathways

New hires will begin their journey at Disney University, the company’s internal training program that teaches the five pillars of customer service. Disney Ambassador Kylee Withers said the resort’s “people‑first” culture makes Disney unique and drives the new hiring effort.

Housekeeping and concierge staff will receive one to three days of on‑site training at Disney University before moving on to on‑the‑job instruction at their assigned locations. Withers emphasized that these behind‑the‑scenes cast members lay the foundation for the guest experience.

Costuming department growth

The costuming department, which employs about 1,500 cast members across 50 roles, will also benefit from the hiring surge. With 2.5 million garments in circulation, Walt Disney World boasts the world’s largest working wardrobe.

Leadership roots and retention

Disney highlights that three out of five of its leaders started in hourly positions, and full‑time cast members in professional, leadership and skilled roles stay an average of 12 years—roughly three times the national average, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (2024).

Chef Barry Montville, now with Disney’s catering services, began as a line cook 29 years ago. He praised the ability to build a lifelong career without having to relocate, noting that he has worked in 14 Disney restaurants.

Impact on the local economy

The new positions will further cement Walt Disney World Resort as the largest single‑site employer in the United States, with roughly 80,000 cast members already on staff and more than 300 job applications received daily. The hiring plan is expected to boost local employment, support families, and contribute to the region’s economic vitality.
