At a recent Caddo Parish Commission Public Safety Committee meeting, Commissioner Ken Epperson highlighted a growing traffic‑safety concern outside the Caddo Community Action Agency’s Head Start headquarters on St. Vincent Avenue. The agency, which serves young children and families, reported that Shreveport police issued 34 speeding tickets in the immediate area on a single day.
Speeding poses a danger to children
Epperson, who also serves as vice‑chairman of the agency’s board of directors, explained that families and children regularly cross the street to reach the facility. “We’ve been having an issue with speeding in front of that facility,” he told fellow commissioners. “It’s just an accident waiting to happen.”
Proposed safety measures
The commissioner urged the parish to work with the City of Shreveport to install a dedicated crosswalk sign and additional caution signage along St. Vincent Avenue. He also noted that the agency is documenting traffic conditions by photographing vehicles as children arrive and depart, providing concrete evidence of the problem.
Public Safety Committee Chairman Ron Cothran agreed that the parish should coordinate with the Public Works Department and city officials to address the issue promptly. “We need no one to get hurt nor killed because of speeding,” Cothran said.
Next steps
The parish’s Public Works Department is expected to collaborate with Shreveport city officials to evaluate the feasibility of the proposed crosswalk sign and to determine any additional engineering improvements needed for the roadway. Both agencies plan to monitor traffic patterns after any changes are implemented to ensure the safety of the children and families who rely on the Head Start program.
Community members have expressed support for the proposed measures, emphasizing the importance of safe routes to school‑age facilities. As the parish moves forward, officials stress that protecting the youngest residents aligns with Caddo’s broader commitment to family safety and responsible local governance.
