Malkin returns for 21st season with Penguins, eyes final year

CRANBERRY TOWNSHIP, Pa. — The Pittsburgh Penguins have confirmed that veteran forward Evgeni Malkin will suit up for his 21st season, signing a one‑year contract that keeps the 40‑year‑old Russian star in the lineup for the upcoming campaign.

Health and performance drive Malkin’s decision

When asked about his future, Malkin was candid. “If I’m not feeling 100 percent, I’m not playing,” he said, adding that he would retire rather than be a liability. The former MVP’s health will be the key metric guiding any decision beyond this season.

Last season’s resurgence

Despite missing time with injuries, Malkin posted 19 goals and 42 assists last year, averaging more than a point per game for the first time since the 2019‑20 season. His production helped the Penguins finish a surprising second place in the Metropolitan Division.

Contract talks and team continuity

General manager Kyle Dubas, who kept negotiations private after Pittsburgh’s first‑round playoff exit, praised Malkin’s effort. The resulting deal extends the trio of Malkin, captain Sidney Crosby and defenseman Kris Letang together for 21 years – the longest three‑player partnership in major North American professional sports history.

Veteran leadership and Russian presence

With four Russian players on the roster, Malkin is positioned to mentor younger teammates, much as former defenseman Sergei Gonchar did for him two decades ago. “Any advice, any ‘go to dinner,’ you know, we just do it,” Malkin said, acknowledging his role as the senior voice in the locker room.

Career milestones

Entering the season with 1,407 career points, Malkin is just 14 points shy of passing Hall of Fame center Adam Oates and breaking into the NHL’s top‑20 all‑time scoring list. His partnership with Crosby continues to balance Crosby’s reserved style with Malkin’s emotional drive.

Looking ahead

While Malkin hopes the team’s success is rooted in production rather than nostalgia, he remains optimistic. “I think last year I showed my good games, and I am excited to be here,” he said. “I’m here to win.”

The Penguins are banking on the veteran’s experience and skill as they aim to improve on last season’s playoff disappointment and contend for another Stanley Cup.
