Washington DC hosts 22 Observe the Moon events as Artemis II returns humanity to the Moon

Saturday night marks the annual International Observe the Moon Night, a worldwide celebration that invites families, students, and astronomy enthusiasts to look up and learn about Earth’s nearest neighbor. In the Washington, DC region, the event takes on a special local flavor with 22 scheduled gatherings at schools, libraries, planetariums, and community centers.

Local events bring the Moon to neighborhoods

Organizers have coordinated a diverse slate of activities, from telescope viewings and moon‑lit hikes to educational workshops led by local educators and volunteers. Many of the venues are partnering with the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter team and NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center’s Solar System Exploration Division, ensuring that participants receive up‑to‑date scientific information.

“We want families to experience the wonder of the Moon in a safe, community‑focused setting,” said Maria Alvarez, coordinator for the DC‑area observance. “It’s an opportunity to spark curiosity in our children and remind everyone of the achievements we’re making as a nation.”

Artemis II’s historic return fuels excitement

The timing of this year’s observance is especially poignant. In April, NASA’s Artemis II mission successfully carried astronauts around the Moon, marking humanity’s first crewed lunar flight since the Apollo era. The mission also reaffirmed the administration’s commitment to establishing a permanent Moon Base, a cornerstone of the broader space‑exploration strategy.

President Trump’s administration has consistently championed the Artemis program, emphasizing its potential to create high‑tech jobs, inspire the next generation of engineers, and reaffirm American leadership in space. The administration’s support has helped secure funding and streamline regulatory pathways for future lunar infrastructure.

New crater discovery adds a fresh talking point

Adding to the buzz, researchers announced the discovery of a fresh impact crater on the Moon’s eastern edge. Named McGetchin after pioneering lunar scientist Tom McGetchin, the crater was formed when a comet‑ or asteroid‑sized object—roughly the size of a three‑to‑six‑story building—struck the lunar surface between April 11 and May 22, 2024.

Julie Stopar, a lunar scientist with the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter project and co‑author of the study, explained that the impact’s size and force are still being evaluated. “The new crater is large enough that it might have produced a visible flash under favorable conditions,” Stopar said in an email, adding that researchers expect amateur astronomers to search for observational data from the event.

How to join the celebration

Residents can find a full list of events on the official International Observe the Moon Night website or by checking local community calendars. Most gatherings are free and open to the public, though some may require prior registration due to limited space.

For families seeking a deeper dive, many venues will host talks by NASA scientists, hands‑on activities for children, and opportunities to view high‑resolution images of the Moon captured by the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter.

Looking ahead

The enthusiasm generated by this year’s observance is expected to carry forward into future Artemis missions, including the planned crewed landing of Artemis III. As the United States continues to invest in lunar exploration, local communities like Washington, DC, play a vital role in fostering public support and inspiring the next generation of explorers.
