Ohio State launches BuildX program to foster student startups

Ohio State University announced today that it is rolling out the BuildX initiative, a comprehensive effort to help Buckeye students launch real businesses. The program, which begins in spring 2027, reflects the university’s commitment to empowering the next generation of entrepreneurs and strengthening the local economy.

What BuildX Offers

BuildX will provide two three‑credit startup labs alongside the existing Intro to Software Startups course. One lab is designed for students who are still testing an idea, while the other serves teams ready to build and launch a company. Participants will receive mentorship from experienced founders, operators and investors, as well as eligibility for startup development funding.

Accelerator and Funding

The centerpiece of the initiative is the BuildX Accelerator, a competitive summer program that will select student ventures for a $15,000 grant, intensive coaching and direct access to investors. The accelerator will operate out of a new 7,000‑square‑foot space in Pomerene Hall on the Columbus campus, culminating in a Demo Day where student founders pitch their businesses to a crowd of investors and supporters.

Financial Support

A $1 million BuildX Fund, sourced from donor investment in student innovation, will underwrite the accelerator grants and other program costs. Applications for the accelerator open on October 1 and will be reviewed on a rolling basis. Prospective participants can attend a virtual information session on September 25 and an in‑person session on October 1.

Goals and Impact

The university aims to launch 100 investable student startups each year by 2030. By providing structured coursework, hands‑on mentorship and seed capital, BuildX seeks to turn campus ideas into viable companies that create jobs, generate tax revenue and reinforce the values of hard work and personal liberty that many families cherish.

Community and Family Benefits

Beyond the campus, the initiative promises to boost the Columbus business ecosystem. Local investors, established firms and community leaders will have early access to innovative ventures, fostering partnerships that can benefit families and neighborhoods across Ohio. The program aligns with the broader goal of nurturing a culture of entrepreneurship that supports traditional families and the American Dream.

Ohio State’s leadership emphasized that BuildX is a direct response to student demand for practical, market‑ready education. “We want to give our students the tools and resources they need to succeed in the real world,” said a university spokesperson. “By investing in their ideas now, we are building a stronger, more prosperous Ohio for future generations.”
