East Fort Worth garden to teach youth biblical crops and stewardship

On the banks of an east Fort Worth creek, a nonprofit called TFT Organization is turning a vacant lot at 2213 Woodberry Drive into a faith‑focused community garden. The project, slated to break ground on construction in January, will feature two greenhouses and a shed where area youth can learn to grow and harvest crops mentioned in the Bible.

Faith‑centered learning through gardening

“It’s not just about the gardening,” said TFT President Broderick Taylor. “It’s about them taking the word in.” The garden’s purpose is to bring children closer to the Lord by letting them tend to plants such as onions, garlic, pomegranates, figs, barley and other biblical foods that thrive in North Texas.

Master gardener Michael Warren, who met Taylor while working in community‑service juvenile probation, explained that many of the young participants have never seen the origins of the foods they buy at the grocery store. “A lot of them had no idea where a lot of the foods that they were eating from the grocery store came from, and that they could actually grow a lot of those foods themselves,” Warren said.

Mentorship and life skills

The garden will also serve as a classroom for practical life skills. Chef Carl Harris, owner of Cravings Gourmet Catering, will work with the youth to prepare meals using the garden’s harvest. Harris emphasized the importance of self‑sufficiency: “To make a well‑rounded individual, you need to know some other parts of life. Part of that is knowing how to sustain yourself, knowing how to feed yourself, knowing where your food comes from.”

TFT Organization, which stands for Tomorrow’s Families Today, already provides mentorship in areas ranging from financial wellness to safe gun usage and career readiness. The nonprofit also partners with Tarrant County Juvenile Services, reinforcing its commitment to guiding at‑risk youth toward positive futures.

Progress and next steps

Much of the land has already been cleared, and volunteers continue to prepare the site for the upcoming greenhouses. The organization hopes to have the first planting season underway early next year, giving local children a hands‑on way to explore Scripture, develop stewardship habits, and build community ties.
