Virginia 2026 Midterm Voter Guide: Key Races and Constitutional Amendments

With the 2026 midterm election just over six weeks away, Virginians are gearing up to cast their votes on a slate of federal races and three statewide constitutional amendments. While the nation watches the midterms as a barometer of President Trump’s agenda, the real impact will be felt right here in Virginia’s neighborhoods, suburbs and rural towns.

U.S. Senate Race

Democratic incumbent Mark Warner is seeking a fourth term. He faces Republican challenger Bert Mizusawa, a retired U.S. Army Major General who secured the Republican nomination in August. Although analysts label the seat as safely Democratic, the statewide nature of the contest makes it a useful gauge of how federal policies championed by the Trump administration are resonating with Virginians.

U.S. House Races

Virginia’s 1st District – Republican incumbent Rob Wittman runs for his tenth full term against Democratic nominee Shannon Taylor, Henrico County Commonwealth’s Attorney. The district stretches from the Richmond suburbs through the Middle Peninsula and Northern Neck, blending growing suburban areas with conservative‑leaning rural communities. This race will test whether Democrats can make inroads beyond the state’s urban centers.

Virginia’s 2nd District – Republican incumbent Jen Kiggans defends her seat against Democratic challenger Elaine Luria and independent candidates. Both are Navy veterans, and the race is expected to draw national attention as Democrats aim to flip a Republican‑held seat in the House.

Virginia’s 3rd District – Democratic incumbent Eugene Vindman seeks re‑election against Republican nominee Douglas Ollivant, Libertarian Taner Lopez and other independents. The district, anchored in Northern Virginia suburbs, was competitive in 2024 when Vindman won with about 51% of the vote. Republicans are again targeting the seat.

Virginia’s 4th District – Longtime Democratic incumbent Don Beyer runs for another term against Republican Tony Sabio and third‑party challengers. The district includes the D.C.‑adjacent communities of Alexandria and Arlington and reliably leans Democratic.

Virginia’s 5th District – Democratic incumbent Suhas Subramanyam defends his seat against Republican Dave Beckwith, Libertarian Shelly Arnoldi and independent Tim Sharman. The outer‑Northern Virginia district reflects rapid demographic growth and shifting political dynamics.

State Constitutional Amendments

Virginia voters will also decide three amendments that could reshape the Commonwealth’s legal landscape.

  • Amendment 1 – Reproductive Health Care Rights: Adds an explicit right to personal reproductive freedom, covering decisions about prenatal care, contraception, abortion care and fertility treatments. Supporters argue it safeguards individual liberty; opponents raise concerns about protecting unborn children.
  • Amendment 2 – Marriage Equality: Repeals an outdated clause that limits marriage to a union between a man and a woman, replacing it with language that recognizes marriage equality for consenting adults regardless of sex, gender or race.
  • Amendment 3 – Restoration of Felony Voting Rights: Removes the historic requirement for gubernatorial approval and automatically restores voting rights to individuals with past felony convictions once they have completed their prison terms.

Each amendment requires a simple majority “yes” vote to become part of the state constitution. Voters should review the language carefully and consider how these changes align with their values on personal liberty, family, and faith.

Why It Matters

The outcomes of these races and amendments will influence Virginia’s representation in Washington, D.C., and shape the Commonwealth’s stance on individual freedoms. For families and faith‑based communities, the ballot measures touch on core issues of parental rights, marriage, and the reintegration of citizens who have served their sentences. For voters who support President Trump’s vision of limited government and strong constitutional protections, these votes are an opportunity to affirm those principles at the state level.

Make sure to check your polling location, verify your registration, and head to the ballot box on Election Day. Your voice matters in shaping Virginia’s future.
