EU to release €3.3 billion for Ukrainian missiles and drones, von der Leyen announces

In a move that underscores continued Western support for Ukraine’s defence, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen announced on Thursday that the European Union will disburse €3.3 billion to Ukraine on Friday. The funds are earmarked specifically for the procurement of missiles and drones, critical assets in Ukraine’s effort to resist Russian aggression.

Phone call with President Zelenskiy

Von der Leyen shared the news on her X account, noting, “I just had a phone call with President Zelenskiy. Tomorrow (Friday) we will disburse €3.3 billion for missiles and drones in Ukraine.” The announcement follows a brief but described as “very productive” conversation with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy, who later posted on Telegram that the discussion focused on “vital steps for the resilience of our defence,” including financing matters.

Why the funding matters

The €3.3 billion allocation is part of the EU’s broader security assistance package for Kyiv, which has already included billions in macro‑financial aid, humanitarian relief, and military equipment. By directing resources toward advanced missile systems and unmanned aerial platforms, the EU aims to bolster Ukraine’s ability to strike high‑value targets and defend its airspace, a capability that has proven decisive in recent battles.

European solidarity in action

European leaders have repeatedly emphasized that a strong, capable Ukraine is essential for the stability of the continent. The latest disbursement reflects a consensus among EU member states that continued investment in Ukraine’s defence is both a moral obligation and a strategic necessity. It also signals to Russia that the European Union remains united in its resolve to counter aggression.

Implications for U.S. interests

While the announcement comes from Brussels, it aligns with the United States’ own commitment to supporting Ukraine. A robust Ukrainian defence reduces the likelihood of the conflict spilling over into neighboring NATO members, thereby safeguarding European security—a core interest of the United States and its allies.

Looking ahead

Both von der Leyen and Zelenskiy indicated that further discussions will continue on additional steps to strengthen Ukraine’s defence posture. The EU’s swift action on Friday demonstrates that, despite the challenges of coordinating multinational aid, the alliance can deliver decisive financial support when needed.

As the funds are transferred, Ukrainian officials are expected to begin the procurement process for the missile and drone systems, working with partner nations and defense contractors to ensure rapid delivery to the front lines.
