Marbach Road stretch renamed to honor Jose Flores III, with family urging traffic safety upgrades

San Antonio officials announced that a portion of Marbach Road adjacent to John Jay High School will soon bear the name “Jose Flores III Memorial Way.” The dedication honors the 16‑year‑old student who was tragically struck by a truck while using the crosswalk on the road a year ago.

Family’s call for safer streets

Jose Flores III’s father, Jose Flores Jr., expressed relief that the community is remembering his son, but he also stressed that the memorial should be a catalyst for change. “It’s rough, man. I’m glad they put the sign up and everything, but it’s been a rough year,” he said. Flores Jr. said the family will continue to push for traffic signals at the intersection, noting that speeding remains a problem despite the tragedy.

Mother’s plea to students and drivers

Mother Amanda Saucedo urged students to follow crossing rules and asked drivers to slow down. “I would really hope they can follow the rules because I would not want another family going through what we’ve been through,” she said. Saucedo added that, even after the accident, many motorists still drive fast, endangering children who walk to school each morning.

Memorial sign and next steps

The new “Jose Flores III Memorial Way” sign is slated for installation in the coming months. For the Flores family, the marker is more than a plaque; it is a promise that their son’s legacy will not be forgotten. “He helped me with his siblings, he washed his dishes for me after I came home from a long day at work,” Saucedo recalled, describing her son as a helpful, goofy, and caring young man.

Flores III had dreamed of becoming a firefighter, a goal his father remembered fondly. “His goal in life was to be a firefighter. He said he wanted to save lives and help people,” Flores Jr. said.

Community response

Local residents and school officials have voiced support for the naming and for additional safety measures. While the sign will serve as a permanent reminder of the loss, the family’s advocacy highlights a broader concern about traffic speed in school zones throughout the city.

City transportation planners have not yet confirmed a timeline for installing traffic signals at the Marbach Road crossing, but the Flores family remains hopeful that the memorial will accelerate the process. “We will keep pushing for drivers to slow down on that section of road and in school zones,” the family said.

How to stay informed

Community members who wish to stay updated on the memorial dedication and any forthcoming traffic‑control projects can follow the John Jay High School website or contact the San Antonio Transportation Department. The story was originally reported by KSAT.
