Fort Wayne City Council Approves Bluffton‑Winchester Road Safety Improvements

FORT WAYNE, Indiana – The Fort Wayne City Council’s transportation committee voted to move forward with a neighborhood infrastructure project aimed at improving safety at the busy Bluffton Road and Winchester Road intersection. The project, budgeted at $339,862, received committee approval and will await final endorsement at a future full‑council meeting.

Key design elements

The plan calls for the stop bar to be shifted closer to the intersection, giving drivers clearer sight lines and reducing the likelihood of rear‑end collisions. A larger concrete island will be built to separate traffic flows and provide a protected space for pedestrians crossing the street. In addition, a dedicated right‑turn lane for northbound Bluffton Road traffic will be created, easing congestion during peak hours.

Pedestrian‑focused upgrades

Pedestrian safety is a central focus of the improvement. The design includes ADA‑compliant pedestrian signals and curb ramps, ensuring that residents of all ages and abilities can cross safely. These upgrades align with Fort Wayne’s broader commitment to making sidewalks and crossings accessible to everyone, including families with strollers, seniors, and individuals using mobility devices.

Mayor Tucker’s infrastructure agenda

Mayor Sharon Tucker has highlighted neighborhood infrastructure as a priority for her administration. This year, the city has earmarked $37 million for a range of projects that address road safety, sidewalk repairs, and community beautification. The Bluffton‑Winchester Road project is one of several initiatives designed to protect residents and support the daily flow of commerce and school traffic in the area.

Community impact

Local residents have expressed relief that the city is taking concrete steps to address safety concerns at this intersection, which has seen a number of near‑miss incidents in recent months. By improving visibility, adding a dedicated turn lane, and installing modern pedestrian signals, the project is expected to reduce accidents and encourage more walking and biking within the neighborhood.

Next steps

The council will consider the final approval of the project at an upcoming full‑council session. Once approved, construction is slated to begin later this year, with an anticipated completion date before the end of 2027. City officials will provide regular updates on the construction timeline and any temporary traffic adjustments required during the work.

Fort Wayne’s continued investment in neighborhood infrastructure reflects a broader commitment to safe, livable streets that support families, businesses, and the community’s overall quality of life.
