Fire danger persists as Gracemont wildfire burns over 3,000 acres in Caddo County

Crews from across Oklahoma have been battling the Gracemont wildfire since it ignited on Sunday, and the blaze has already consumed more than 3,000 acres in Caddo County. The fire’s rapid spread prompted an unprecedented cooperative effort, with fire departments from Binger, Hinton, Lexington and dozens of neighboring towns joining forces to protect homes and farmland.

Multi‑agency response

Statewide resources, including aerial support from Sky 5, have been dispatched to the scene. Local pilots and out‑of‑state crews, notably from New Mexico, have taken to the skies to drop water and fire retardant on the most active hotspots. On Tuesday, firefighters reported a jump in containment, but the fire remains a serious threat as new flare‑ups continue to emerge.

Community volunteers step up

Neighbors are rallying around the effort. Longview Church in Binger has organized a supply drive, collecting food, water and personal‑protective equipment for the men and women on the front lines. One volunteer, Neva Meiwes, shared that her grandson has been on duty since Sunday night, taking only brief rests before returning to the fire line.

“He’s been out since Sunday night. Got a break on Monday night to sleep a little bit, and then he came back out again today,” Meiwes said. Stories like this underscore the deep sense of duty that fuels the response.

Burn bans and safety warnings

Oklahoma officials have placed 58 of the state’s 77 counties under a burn ban as of Wednesday morning. While Oklahoma County’s ban expired earlier this week, officials warned it could be reinstated if conditions worsen. Residents are urged to avoid open flames, refrain from using fireworks, and follow local fire‑department advisories.

Impact and outlook

Authorities confirm that a few structures have been lost, but no injuries have been reported. The fire’s momentum is being slowed by the combined ground and aerial attack, yet officials caution that the situation remains fluid. Continued vigilance from both firefighters and the public will be essential to prevent further spread.

For those wishing to assist, donations can be made online through the Longview Church supply drive. Community solidarity, paired with a coordinated state response, offers the best hope of bringing the Gracemont fire under control and safeguarding the families of Caddo County.
