Latina Sweat Project to Leave Pilsen Studio After Owner’s Construction Cuts Space

Latina Sweat Project, a nonprofit that provides affordable yoga, strength training and community‑building events on Chicago’s Southwest Side, will move out of its Pilsen studio at 1601 S. Morgan St. on Sept. 30. The decision follows a series of setbacks after the building was sold earlier this year.

Construction and Space Reduction

Shortly after the sale, the new owner began construction that added a wall dividing the larger studio room. The wall reduced the room’s capacity from up to 75 participants to a maximum of 20, forcing the organization to slash class sizes. Ongoing construction also introduced noisy, dusty and paint‑filled air, making it difficult to hold the peaceful yoga and restorative sessions the community relies on.

Impact on Members

Founder and executive director Margarita Quiñones‑Peña said the changes were “more than a transactional wall” because they threatened a safe, welcoming space for families, migrants and low‑income residents. Some members considered canceling, prompting the nonprofit to implement a $5 cancellation fee for the first time.

Community Response

At a town‑hall meeting attended by roughly 100 supporters, leaders, volunteers and funders, attendees unanimously voted to vacate the studio and revert to a pop‑up model while a permanent location is secured, ideally by early 2027. The organization plans to partner with other Southwest Side nonprofits, the Chicago Arts Department, twelve Chicago Public Schools and three city libraries to host temporary classes.

Future Plans and Funding

Latina Sweat Project serves more than 5,000 students each month and has reached over 100,000 since its 2022 launch. The group is exploring city grant and Tax Increment Financing (TIF) opportunities, with Alderman Byron Sigcho‑Lopez’s office assisting in identifying potential funding sources. The nonprofit hopes to find a new building in Pilsen that can accommodate three studio rooms, restoring its ability to offer daily classes from early morning through evening, a 200‑hour teacher‑training program, and free wellness events for migrants and low‑income families.

Looking Ahead

While the loss of a permanent home is disappointing, board president‑elect Xochyl Perez sees the transition as an opportunity to expand the organization’s reach across the Southwest Side. “We’re excited to bring our welcoming, accessible wellness practice to new neighborhoods,” she said. Long‑time supporter Yesenia Peyret echoed the sentiment, noting that the nonprofit’s mission aligns with broader concerns about gentrification and housing stability in Pilsen.

Latina Sweat Project’s upcoming Sweat Fest, an annual exercise festival, has already seen ticket sales quadruple, reflecting strong community backing as the organization navigates this challenging period.
