Assisted Living vs. Memory Care: Key Differences for Families

When a loved one needs help with daily tasks, families often face the choice between assisted living and memory care. Both options provide housing, meals and assistance with activities of daily living such as bathing and toileting, but memory care adds specialized support for seniors living with dementia.

Cost Comparison

According to A Place for Mom’s proprietary data through July 2, 2026, the national average cost of assisted living is $5,830 per month, while memory care averages $6,999 per month. Factors that affect pricing include location, level of care needed, and the amenities offered.

Staffing and Training

Both settings employ staff trained to help residents with everyday tasks. Memory care staff, however, receive additional training in dementia care and are equipped to manage challenging behaviors such as wandering, aggression and falls. As senior support specialist Maureen Bradley explains, “Memory care communities tend to have a much higher caregiver‑to‑resident ratio, which is important because it can take longer to provide ADL care and residents often need more direct oversight for safety and social engagement.”

Safety and Security Features

Assisted living communities may include in‑room emergency alert systems and daily check‑ins. Memory care facilities go further with secured environments designed to prevent wandering, reduce confusion and protect residents from injury. Features can include locked doors, alarmed exits and specially designed floor plans that help orient residents.

Amenities and Activities

Assisted living communities typically offer a range of social activities, fitness classes and communal dining. Memory care communities often provide similar amenities but add therapeutic programs tailored to dementia, such as sensory stimulation, structured daily routines, and plenty of natural sunlight to help regulate sleep patterns and reduce sundowning.

When to Choose Assisted Living

Assisted living may be appropriate if memory loss is not an immediate concern or if the resident is in the early stages of dementia. Bradley notes that assisted living can support early‑ and mid‑stage dementia by managing medications, providing reminders for showers and meals, and offering a safe, familiar environment.

When Memory Care Becomes Necessary

As dementia progresses, safety often becomes the primary driver for moving to memory care. “If someone is prone to going for walks and getting lost, assisted living is no longer an option,” Bradley says. Memory care’s additional security measures, specialized therapies and higher staff ratios give families peace of mind that their loved one is protected.

Transitioning Within the Same Community

Many facilities offer both assisted living and memory care, allowing seniors to stay in the same community as their needs change. This continuity can lessen the emotional impact of a move, as residents remain surrounded by familiar staff and friends.

Family Involvement and Visitation

Both settings encourage family participation in care plans. Memory care may have stricter visiting hours to maintain residents’ routines, while most assisted living communities have more flexible policies.

Pet Policies

Personal pets are generally not allowed in memory care due to safety concerns, though therapy animals and community pets are often welcomed. Assisted living communities are more likely to accommodate resident pets.

State Regulations

There are no specific state mandates dictating when a resident must move from assisted living to memory care. The decision is typically made by the resident, their medical team, family members and community staff.

Families facing these choices should consult with healthcare providers and tour local facilities to determine which environment best supports the health, safety and dignity of their senior loved ones.
