Nearly Half of School Bus Riders Report Close Calls with Dangerous Drivers, Survey Finds

Parents across the United States are voicing growing concerns about the safety of school‑bus travel. A recent national survey conducted by the Governors Highway Safety Association shows that nearly half of children who ride school buses have had a close call with a dangerous driver. The findings underscore the urgency of stronger enforcement measures to protect our youngest commuters.

Survey details and key findings

The survey, which was funded by BusPatrol – the nation’s leading provider of school‑bus stop‑arm enforcement solutions – polled a broad cross‑section of parents. Respondents reported that 49% of school‑bus riders have experienced a near‑miss with a driver who was speeding, failing to stop, or otherwise endangering the bus. Additionally, 53% of parents believe that dangerous driving persists because motorists think they won’t be caught.

When asked about potential solutions, an overwhelming nine‑in‑ten parents expressed support for automated stop‑arm camera enforcement. These cameras capture images of any vehicle that illegally passes a school bus while its stop arm is extended, providing clear evidence for citations.

Local implementation and parental reactions

Automated stop‑arm cameras are already in use in many school districts throughout the Washington, D.C., metropolitan area, where they have contributed to a noticeable decline in illegal passes. “Anyone who’s a parent thinks, ‘hey, my kid going to school should be the safest thing they do in their day,’ but the reality is, the roadway is one of the most dangerous things any of us do in our day,” said BusPatrol President and Chief Innovation Officer Justin Meyers.

Parents interviewed by FOX 5 echoed the survey’s conclusions. “Them running lights, them not completely coming to a full stop sign, kids not seeing them cut corners,” said Ardee Revell, a mother of two. “It’s just chaotic, especially since the school year has started.” Local police departments are also stepping up outreach, reminding drivers of the legal requirement to stop for school buses and the potential penalties for violations.

Why stop‑arm cameras matter

Stop‑arm cameras provide an objective record that can be used to enforce existing traffic laws. By automatically photographing offending vehicles, they remove the need for a police officer to witness the violation in real time, increasing the likelihood that dangerous drivers are held accountable. This technology aligns with the broader goal of safeguarding children’s daily commute, a priority shared by families, schools, and law‑enforcement agencies alike.

What’s next for school‑bus safety?

Given the strong parental backing, many districts are evaluating the cost‑benefit of expanding camera coverage. Advocates argue that the modest investment in equipment and installation is outweighed by the potential lives saved and the reduction in traffic‑related injuries near schools.

As the new school year progresses, officials encourage drivers to remain vigilant, obey stop‑arm signals, and respect the safety of children on board. Continued public awareness campaigns and the adoption of proven enforcement tools such as automated cameras are essential steps toward ensuring that a ride on the school bus remains a safe and predictable part of every child’s day.
