Mountain lion tranquilized and relocated after tree sighting in Westminster

Westminster police received a call at about 10:20 a.m. on September 15 reporting a mountain lion perched in a tree on Eaton Street between 112th and 113th Avenues. The sighting prompted an immediate response from the Westminster Police Department (WPD) and Colorado Parks and Wildlife (CPW).

Rapid response and safety measures

WPD officers promptly closed the affected stretch of road to protect motorists and residents while CPW teams arrived on scene. Within an hour, CPW wildlife officers tranquilized the animal and prepared it for relocation. The swift coordination between local law enforcement and state wildlife officials helped ensure public safety and minimize stress on the animal.

Details about the animal

According to CPW, the mountain lion is a juvenile male weighing roughly 60 to 70 pounds. Officials believe the young cat has been traveling down a natural corridor toward Standley Lake for about a week. It is common for mountain lions of this age to leave their mothers and begin exploring larger territories, a behavior noted by wildlife biologists across Colorado.

Relocation plans

After the tranquilization, CPW officials transported the lion to a more suitable habitat in the mountains west of Castle Rock. The relocation site offers the animal ample space and prey, allowing it to continue its natural development away from residential neighborhoods.

Why this incident matters

While the presence of a mountain lion in a suburban area can be alarming, experts emphasize that such incidents are rare and typically result from young animals testing new routes. CPW did not link this particular sighting to the ongoing drought conditions affecting the region, noting that juvenile movement patterns are a normal part of the species’ life cycle.

Community reassurance

Westminster officials encourage residents to remain vigilant and report any wildlife sightings promptly. By notifying authorities early, the community helps protect both people and animals. CPW continues to monitor mountain lion activity throughout the Denver metro area and works closely with local agencies to address any future encounters.
