Kansas gubernatorial debate at State Fair sees candidates trade accusations of extremism

During the Kansas State Fair debate on September 15, Republican Senate President Ty Masterson and Democratic Senate candidate Cindy Holscher exchanged sharp attacks, each accusing the other of holding extremist positions that could harm Kansas families.

Property‑tax relief becomes a flashpoint

Masterson opened the discussion by criticizing Holscher’s voting record on property‑tax relief, saying, “She’s spent years voting against property tax relief.” He framed the issue as a direct threat to Kansas homeowners.

Holscher countered, arguing that Masterson’s inability to deliver relief despite a GOP supermajority in the Senate showed either a lack of will or capacity. “He either doesn’t want to do it or he can’t do it,” she repeated throughout the debate, pointing to his two‑decade tenure as a state senator and six years as Senate leader as evidence of inaction.

Data‑center tax breaks spark controversy

The candidates also clashed over a proposed tax incentive for data‑center development. Masterson accused Holscher of flip‑flopping, noting she originally voted for the tax breaks but later changed her stance. He called her a “typical politician” and warned that not every data‑center project makes sense for Kansas.

Holscher defended her shift, saying she adjusts positions when new information emerges. She expressed regret over her earlier vote and now supports a moratorium on data‑center projects until safeguards protect Kansas resources and residents. “We need guard rails in place to protect our resources and our people,” she said.

Labels and rhetoric intensify

Both candidates resorted to strong labels. Masterson repeatedly called Holscher a socialist, leftist and progressive, while Holscher warned that Masterson wants to revert Kansas to an era that harmed the state’s economy. Holscher’s supporters displayed signs reading “Brownback Remastered,” drawing a parallel to former Governor Sam Brownback’s tax‑cut experiment, which led to a budget crisis that was later reversed by a bipartisan coalition.

“This is Brownback 2.0, supported by the same people that supported Sam Brownback and the disastrous Brownback experiment,” Holscher declared.

Local voices and voter enthusiasm

The packed, raucous crowd at the fair pavilion added to the heated atmosphere, with jeers and cheers echoing throughout the debate. Eighteen‑year‑old James Eakle voiced his support for Masterson, saying, “I think he’s a pleasant change from Laura Kelly. Masterson will do a great job at reversing a lot of the damage she’s done and helping Kansas to grow.”

A former Republican turned “recovering Republican,” teacher Alice Keeler, explained her shift after “President Trump fatigue.” She emphasized her unchanged values, stating, “We’re for pro‑democracy, we’re for freedom for people and we love farmers.” Keeler now backs Holscher, noting that all three of her children are named after Republican figures, including Nixon.

Looking ahead to the primary

Both Masterson and Holscher continue to court moderate voters while portraying each other as too radical for Kansas. The debate underscores the stark ideological divide within the state’s gubernatorial race as the primary approaches later this year.
