Historic St. James Hotel in downtown Selma to reopen under Marriott franchise

Selma, Ala. – After a year‑long closure, the historic St. James Hotel is preparing to open its doors once more. The 55‑room landmark, known for its interior courtyard and classic charm, will operate under the Marriott brand, giving travelers access to the Marriott Bonvoy rewards program while preserving local ownership.

Local ownership stays intact

Kelly Lewis, a longtime proprietor, emphasized that the partnership with Marriott does not change the hotel’s roots. “It will still be locally owned, still the same people running it and all that,” Lewis said. “But we’ll have the benefit of the Marriott franchise system and rewards and Bonvoy.”

Marriott team on site

Marriott officials are currently on the property conducting inspections and training staff to ensure the hotel meets the brand’s standards. The presence of the corporate team signals a commitment to quality and consistency for guests who expect the level of service associated with the Marriott name.

A boost for downtown Selma

The reopening is expected to revitalize the downtown area, drawing visitors to local restaurants, shops and cultural attractions. Economic development leaders have praised the move as a positive step for Selma’s hospitality sector, noting that a fully operational historic hotel can generate jobs, increase tax revenue and enhance the city’s tourism profile.

Amenities for modern travelers

In addition to its historic architecture, the St. James Hotel will feature a full‑service fitness center, a bar, and a kitchen that can accommodate events and meetings. The meeting space is designed to serve both business travelers and community groups, providing a versatile venue for conferences, weddings and local gatherings.

Community response

Residents expressed optimism about the hotel’s return. Longtime Selma citizen Maria Thompson said, “It’s good to see a piece of our history coming back to life. It’s a sign that our town is moving forward while honoring its past.” Local business owners also anticipate increased foot traffic and patronage as hotel guests explore nearby eateries and boutiques.

Looking ahead

The St. James Hotel’s reopening aligns with broader efforts to preserve Selma’s historic assets while fostering economic growth. City officials have highlighted the importance of maintaining the character of downtown while attracting national brands that can bring investment and visibility. With Marriott’s brand recognition and the hotel’s storied legacy, the property is poised to become a cornerstone of Selma’s revitalization strategy.

Guests can expect the hotel to welcome reservations within the next few days, with full operations slated to commence shortly thereafter. The blend of historic ambiance and modern hospitality aims to offer both locals and visitors a unique experience rooted in Selma’s rich heritage.
