TXDOT to build $10.6 million truck parking facilities in Bowie County

The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) announced a $10.6 million public‑works project that will add safe, legal parking for commercial trucks along Interstate 30 in East Texas. The work focuses on Bowie County, where new parking lots will be built on both sides of the highway near County Road 4204.

Project details and timeline

Construction is slated to start next month, with completion expected in 2028. The Bowie County site will accommodate roughly 160 trucks, providing dedicated spaces, ramps, lighting and signage. A complementary effort in neighboring Titus County will add about 22 parking spaces near the I‑30 weigh station west of Mount Pleasant, with that phase slated for completion next year.

Why the parking is needed

TxDOT officials say the shortage of truck parking forces drivers to stop on highway shoulders, entrance ramps and other unsafe locations. “When there is a lack of truck parking, you’ll see commercial trucks parked on the ramps. They’ll be parked on the shoulders,” TxDOT spokeswoman Heather Deaton explained. “That can not only be a hazard for motorists, but it can also damage our infrastructure.”

By providing designated parking areas, the agency hopes to reduce roadway hazards, protect the pavement and improve overall traffic flow for both truck drivers and the average motorist.

Community impact

Deaton emphasized the project’s benefit to the hardworking men and women who travel through the region. “We want to provide these hardworking men and women that are traveling, driving to our communities. We want to provide them with a safe place to park,” she said. “We also want to protect the average vehicles that are on the road as well.”

Local businesses that rely on freight transport stand to gain from smoother, safer highways, while residents can expect fewer trucks stopping in unsafe spots near neighborhoods and schools.

Funding and oversight

The $10.6 million budget comes from state transportation funds allocated for infrastructure improvements that enhance safety and support the state’s vital freight corridors. TxDOT will oversee construction, ensuring that the new facilities meet state design standards and are ready for use as soon as the projects are completed.

Looking ahead

Both the Bowie and Titus County projects are part of a broader TxDOT effort to address truck‑parking shortages across Northeast Texas. As the nation’s freight network continues to grow, the agency says similar initiatives may be considered in other high‑traffic corridors to keep Texas highways safe and efficient for all users.
