Widefield School District 3 reports 18 bus stop‑arm violations in first month of school year

EL PASO COUNTY, Colo. – Widefield School District 3 has recorded 18 confirmed violations of Colorado’s school‑bus stop‑arm law during the first month of the new school year. District officials say the numbers are likely higher, as some incidents remain unverified.

New state law aims to protect students

In its second year, the state law requires drivers in both directions to stop when a school bus displays flashing lights and extends its stop arm, unless a physical barrier such as a median separates the lanes. The rule is intended to keep children safe as they board or exit buses, especially when they must cross the street in front of the vehicle.

Local data shows ongoing challenges

Transportation Director Jason Schwartz told KRDO13’s The Road Warrior that the district’s cameras have captured several violations, but fast‑moving traffic sometimes prevents clear license‑plate reads. “We have 18 confirmed cases, and we suspect many more,” Schwartz said. “Our priority is to protect every student on the road.”

One hotspot identified last fall was a stop on the shoulder of Highway 85/87 near the Elm Crest Mobile Home Park. The location’s proximity to the park entrance may lead some drivers to think the stop‑arm rule does not apply.

Penalties reinforce compliance

Law enforcement can issue citations that carry mandatory court appearances and points on the driver’s license. These penalties are designed to deter unsafe behavior and reinforce the seriousness of the law.

District seeks better technology

Schwartz noted that the district is evaluating upgraded camera systems to improve plate capture and streamline reporting to authorities. “Better technology will help us identify violators more reliably and keep our students safe,” he said.

The district urges all motorists to remember that stopping for a loading or unloading bus is not optional. Each violation increases the risk that a child could be struck by a passing vehicle.

Community response

Parents and local residents have expressed support for the law, emphasizing the need for safe streets around schools. “Our kids deserve a safe environment when they travel to and from school,” said one parent who asked to remain unnamed.

Widefield District 3 will continue to monitor compliance, work with law‑enforcement partners, and explore technological upgrades to ensure the safety of its students throughout the school year.
