Kensington community mourns 22‑year‑old father killed in family dispute

Philadelphia – A tragic shooting on the 800 block of East Madison Street in Kensington has left a young family shattered. Semaj Porter, a 22‑year‑old father, was shot to death on Friday, November 28, 2025, the day after Thanksgiving. His mother, Sheila Porter, says her son was preparing to start a new job and was the devoted father of a two‑year‑old child when the violence erupted.

Family dispute turned deadly

According to the mother, the incident stemmed from a heated argument with a family member the day before the shooting. “He got into an argument with a family member, a few family members the day before. From what I know this happened with a family member. Nobody’s perfect, but to shoot my son that many times over a fight. That’s just hard,” Porter said.

She added that the shooter is someone Semaj knew, underscoring the painful reality that the violence came from within the family circle. “No parent should have to bury their child,” she lamented, describing her broken heart and the difficulty of moving forward.

Community response and reward

Local residents and community leaders have expressed deep sorrow for the Porter family and called for swift justice. A $20,000 reward is being offered for information that leads to an arrest and conviction. Tips can be submitted anonymously by calling 215‑546‑TIPS.

The Kensington neighborhood, already grappling with high rates of violent crime, hopes this case will bring renewed focus on safety and the importance of strong family bonds. Faith‑based groups in the area have offered prayers and support for the grieving mother and her grandchild, emphasizing the community’s commitment to caring for one another during times of loss.

Police investigation continues

Philadelphia police have confirmed that the investigation remains active and that the gunman is still at large. Detectives are reviewing surveillance footage, interviewing witnesses, and following leads provided by the public. Officers encourage anyone with information, no matter how small, to come forward.

Authorities have not released details about the suspect’s identity, but they stress that the investigation is a priority. The department’s spokesperson reiterated the city’s dedication to protecting families and ensuring that violent offenders are brought to justice.

Impact on the family

Semaj’s mother, Sheila Porter, is now caring for her grandson alone. She described the daily struggle of raising a toddler while coping with the loss of her son. “We’re left with broken pieces that no one can mend. Every day questioning why,” she said.

Friends and neighbors have organized a candlelight vigil to honor Semaj’s memory and to offer comfort to his family. The event, scheduled for next Saturday at the local community center, will feature prayers, a moment of silence, and an opportunity for residents to share stories of how Semaj touched their lives.

Looking ahead

The tragedy underscores the need for continued community engagement and support for families facing violence. Local churches, charities, and neighborhood associations are urging residents to stay vigilant, report suspicious activity, and support one another through prayer and practical assistance.

As the investigation proceeds, the Kensington community remains hopeful that the reward and public cooperation will lead to the apprehension of the shooter, bringing some measure of justice and closure to a family that has already endured far too much.
