Corsair Artisan Distillery Is Gone, But Hatch Show Print Has Been Making Nashville Beautiful Since 1879

There is a moment, standing inside Hatch Show Print on Fifth Avenue South, when time does something strange. The smell hits you first — a rich, inky perfume that has soaked into the walls over more than a century of continuous operation. Then your eyes adjust to the rows of wooden type cases, the towering antique letterpress machines, the stacks of vivid posters leaning against every available surface. You realize you are not in a museum. You are inside a working print shop that has been producing art since Ulysses S. Grant was still a recent memory.

Hatch Show Print is the oldest letterpress print shop in continuous operation in the United States, and it lives right in the heart of Nashville’s SoBro neighborhood, tucked into the lower level of the Country Music Hall of Fame building. But do not let that address fool you into thinking this is a passive exhibit behind glass. This place breathes. On any given weekday, you can watch printers pulling fresh runs of concert posters, wedding announcements, and limited-edition art prints on the same style of equipment that has been cranking out work here since 1879.

The history alone is staggering. Hatch has printed posters for Elvis Presley, Hank Williams, Dolly Parton, Louis Armstrong, and Bruce Springsteen — not recreations, but actual vintage promotional posters that wallpapered telephone poles and barbershop windows across the American South. That legacy lives on the walls in rotating displays, and the archive holds over one million pieces of type and imagery that printers still pull from regularly.

What makes a visit truly special, though, is that you can do more than look. Hatch offers guided tours that walk you through the history of letterpress printing and the shop’s remarkable legacy, led by staff who clearly love this craft. If you want to go deeper, sign up for one of their hands-on workshops. You will set type by hand, ink a press, and pull your own poster to take home. It is the kind of afternoon that makes you put your phone away and actually pay attention — and that is a rarer gift than it sounds.

The shop also maintains a retail gallery where you can buy everything from archival reprints of classic concert posters to freshly printed tote bags and greeting cards. Even if you only browse, the quality of the work on display is genuinely arresting. Every piece has weight and texture that no digital printer can replicate.

Plan to spend at least an hour here, more if you book a workshop. Parking is available in the Hall of Fame garage just steps away, and the shop is open Tuesday through Saturday. Admission to the shop floor itself is free, though tours and workshops carry a modest fee that is absolutely worth it.

Nashville has no shortage of places that trade on music history, but Hatch Show Print earns its reputation through something simpler and more durable: it never stopped working. One hundred and forty-five years of ink on paper, and every single day the presses still run.
