Raiders lock up tight end Michael Mayer with three‑year, $45 million extension

Las Vegas, Nev. – The Raiders announced Saturday that tight end Michael Mayer has agreed to a three‑year contract extension worth $45 million, with $30 million guaranteed, according to a source familiar with the deal. The terms were not publicly released, but the source confirmed the figures to the Associated Press.

Why Mayer matters for the Raiders’ offense

Mayer, a second‑round pick out of Notre Dame in 2023, entered the 2026 season with 83 receptions for 788 yards and three touchdowns. Despite missing a total of 13 games – seven due to injuries and six in 2024 for personal reasons – he has shown the reliability the Raiders need at the position.

With starting tight end Brock Bowers sidelined by a knee injury, Mayer is expected to start in the season opener when the Miami Dolphins visit Las Vegas on Sunday. Even if Bowers were healthy, the Raiders’ offensive scheme, which frequently employs two‑tight‑end formations, would have given Mayer a significant share of snaps. Ian Thomas remains the third tight end on the depth chart.

Coach and player outlook

Mayer expressed optimism about the upcoming season, citing the return of position coach Luke Steckel to his third year with the organization and the arrival of offensive coordinator Klint Kubiak. “I need to know the offense like the back of my hand, and I need to keep my head down and I need to work,” Mayer said. “I know there’s going to be mistakes. I can’t let mistakes ruin the day, I can’t let them ruin the rep, I can’t let them ruin the period. I’ve got to move on, mistakes happen. I’m very, very excited for this season.”

Impact on the Raiders’ roster strategy

Securing Mayer through 2029 gives the Raiders stability at a position that has become increasingly important in modern NFL offenses. The contract reflects the team’s confidence that Mayer can stay healthy and become a consistent target for quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo. It also signals to other players that the organization is willing to invest in talent that fits its offensive philosophy.

General manager Dave Ziegler praised Mayer’s work ethic and potential. “Michael has shown resilience and a strong desire to improve,” Ziegler said. “We believe he will be a key piece of our offense for years to come.”

Looking ahead

The Raiders will look to build on this commitment as they prepare for a competitive AFC West. With the extension in place, the team can focus on integrating new offensive concepts under Kubiak while keeping the core of its receiving corps intact.

Fans can expect to see Mayer featured prominently in the upcoming game against Miami, a matchup that will test the Raiders’ new offensive approach and provide an early gauge of how the two‑tight‑end sets perform against a strong defensive opponent.
